Bit stumped - Focus 1.6 engine problem

The saga of my free Focus begins. A 1999 1.6 Zetec 5-door hatch, in Pepper Red. Overall in pretty good shape, once I'd cleaned the 5 years of dropped sweeties from under and on the seats. And fitted a new bumper and wing. But it was free :)

Engine starts beautifully, pulls away like a train. Until it warms up that is. Then it refuses to rev smoothly under load, stuttering a bit like it's missing a cylinder. Had a new coil pack couple of months back, and the fuel filter's just been changed. Does need a good service I'll admit, but I'd like to get rid of this niggle first, make sure it's worth spending the money on... Plugs have been out, gap checked, all OK there.

Any ideas appreciated :)

If yours has got a MAF sensor (though my 1.6 Focus doesn't, and has got a MAP sensor instead) if it has, give the MAF sensor a clean and see how things go, they are very easy to do and just clean it with carb cleaner until all the crap has come out of it. They very commonly cause problems when they get really dirty. Failing that, I would try and get it hooked up to a fault code reader and see if any fault codes are thrown up.

Glad you got it sorted - apparently brand new HT Leads do not like used coil pack's on these Zetec engines and as you said they kill the coil pack!
