Always been an AMD supporter, currently have a 939 3800+ clocked to 2.7 gig. Contemplating buying the 3.2 gig Black Edition AM2 chip and a suitable board.

Will there be MUCH performance difference?

I know I'll have to get new ram, 939 had it's day and served me well. Time for a change now me thinks.

the 3800+ is dual core so the only diff will be clock speed... and probably not, if buying a new motherboard and cpu probably best to just go intel core2.

Unless he said definetly X2, then theres a chance its a single core 3800+ as well as there is such a beast. Agree on Core 2 instead though.

The single core 3800+ was only available on S754, where as the OP is on S939 so he must have the X2 3800+.

The 754 Only went Upto 3700+, Apart from a mobile chip which was a 4000+. There was no 3800+ chip released for S754 that I know of.

S939 had both 3800+ & 4000+ Single Core Chips!

As far as black edition Chips go i recon with an unlocked multi the 5000+ versions going to be the best deal :)

agreed, im personaly an amd fan but go with whats best bang for buck not to be a fanboi and follow somthing thats not the best

Yeah, I don't imagine it'll be too expensive and the 65nm AMD's have been alright for clocking from what I've seen at XS etc...
Edit: To echo the above, obviously it's not really worth it if you're not already on the AM2 platform, it's got to be C2D right now I suppose, unless you are going ultra budget.

Yip i think the issue is people only really knowing about the X2 3800 due to its popularity, back in the day the 3000+ and the 3200+ were the only ones really talked about a lot due to their overclockability and cheap price, the 3500+ onwards was a bit dear and not that many people had em so i can see how people may not know about them as much.

not to start another amd versus intel war but why be a fan to any company?

for not a lot more you can go quad core and as you're obviously partial to overclocking AMD is just the worst versus Intel when overclocked in terms of performance versus price....especially seeing how you need a new board and ram - if you already had an AM2 board i'd say fair enough.

at stock AMD are thereabouts but the C2D just run away when they're opened up.

Depends if you can afford a mobo and potentially different ram etc (psu as well?)

Dont get me wrong, You are correct that if given the money this black edition isnt realy worth it , but maybe for early S939 users or even early dual S939 it MIGHT be worth it :)

How? Its AM2 not 939. You'd still need new RAM and board.

Thanks for all your replies. I am still undecided as to what to do. I now have the 939 dual core running at 2.8 at 50 degrees, I am sure with a better cooler I can hit 3 gig. If that's possible I might just leave things alone on cpu/mobo/ram side and just invest in a better GPU. Now 2900 or 8800 anyone :)

Depends on price range.
For me it would go as:
8800GTX
2900xt or 8800gts 640mb either one as thier pretty par.
2900pro

Dont go for the 8800gts 320mb as it will be crushed with titles like crysis due to its memory amount.
