BlackBerry Torch

Well ive had a torch for just over a month and i have to say i love it...its a great device but does have its little quirks. If you have any questions then fire away and ill be happy to answer them although i always recommend that you go into a store and see if you can play with one as its not everyones cup of tea.

But any questions ask and ill try and answer them.

Thought I'd bump this thread instead of making a new one. I have a question or two..

I've read some reviews of the torch and one wasn't particularly good, saying it was laggy and that the slide out keyboard was too small and subsequently rubbish. Is this the case?

And..anyone had any problems with it? Any reasons why it's brilliant?

I will probably try and have a play on one at some point if I can.

Thanks:D

I have one...at work :p In fact I've been activating the Torch handsets at work for users the past month. Nice handsets only let down by a small screen (let down if you're a big screen phone user though) and a fairly poor web browser.

The UI is fine otherwise although there are some jitters in smoothness when scrolling especially in the media gallery.

Handset feels nice though and is pretty rigid too but it's certainly not a full on smart phone to compete with iPhone/Android though.

Thanks Khaaan!, that doesn't sound too bad, I'm fairly used to blackberrys so wouldn like to stick with on if possible, shame they haven't sorted the web browser out through:( What's wrong with it, just slow or is it buggy? I somehow make so with my 8900 for browsing, so I assume it'll be a lot better than that!

I might have a look at a few android phones, do you have one?

All I need it to be good at really is email, as I use that function loads. Good web browsing and camera would be fairly essential also, as I use them too. And last but not least it must be good for making calls and writing texts!

Anyone recommend a good android phone for me to check out? Hmmm, a bit screen would be good aswell..

Thanks:)

LOL the web browser on the torch is the best so far...the torch runs on the newest OS, OS6 which includes the latest webkit browser and its pretty damn fast...only drawback is the small screen so unless you want a big screen then i wouldnt bother with the torch. But i havent noticed any lag or anything like that with the web browser.

Ive had mine for over a month and after owning most of the BB's that have been released...i will say its by far the best BB ive ever used...better than the 9700 i had before. Theres no lag on my torch and the swiping functions are near enough perfect...although to be fair ive got the latest OS on mine as the original OS that mine came with had a few bugs and quirks. The phone still has a few quirks but they arent major for me ie i can live with them.

Tbh mate id suggest you try and get to a store which has a working demo and have a play around with it ie see if its for you as its not everyones cup of tea...it took me almost a week before i started loving mine.

The browser is ok I guess, there are some things I like about it like the actual cursor that appears when using the optical joystick to navigate but it still has compatibility issues with some sites (those using in-line frames for example).

The camera is ok as well, it could have done with some more options like the other phones of the current generation but it does the job as a basic camera and colours are vibrant but details aren't as great as other phones though.

Swiping/Pinch to zoom in media isn't as responsive as I'm used to from the iPhone or HTC Desire/GalaxyS and that was a bit of a bummer because this was one area I expected it to be pretty good or at least on par with the others since it's pretty media centred.

I will go have a good play I suppose, I've been looking around and am sort of leaning towards a HTC Desire HD, just because I was considering getting a tablet for light internet use, but if I could actually find an enjoyable mobile phone browser to use then that would kill two birds with one stone, sort of.

Thanks for putting the effort in Khaan:D

I'll see, our contract is ending soon and I might have the option of changing phone early, which would be very tempting...

If you want enjoyable browsing experience (which includes Flash :p) then it's clear the Android platform is your answer :)

Desire HD!

The Desire HD is slightly chuffing sexy, it must be said. Now I just need a tony stark'esque power pack to run the thing...

I'm actually getting 2 days moderate use of my Desire HD which is far more than I was expecting.

If you use your phone loads (hours of calls etc per day) you could run into problems. The same goes for any capable smartphone, however.

The Desire HD is a very good handset, i had the original Desire back in May but got rid of it because firstly it bored the hell out of me and secondly the battery life on it sucked balls big time. I did consider the Desire HD but having had 2 previous Android handsets...one thing i learned is that they are definitely not for me and probably never will be.

Personally for me, both my 9800 and my iphone4 work brilliantly for me...multimedia wise iphone4 is great...work/communication nothing beats the Blackberry...all imo.

Strange, I'm not bored of my Desire, neither is anyone that has a play around on it!

In fact when I'm bored I just fire up break.com or ******** and watch videos or play Angry Birds and when that frustrates me I just do other funky stuff.

Well most of that i can do on my 9800 torch as well...other than angry birds which i have on the iphone4 as its not out on the BB yet...but i wish they would release some more levels as im finished both the original and halloween editions.

Like i said i didnt find the Desire when i had it all that amazing tbh other than the hardware, which i have to say are very good...it held absolutely zero interest for me as a platform.

I guess I just use a wider variety of features available to Android then which is why I enjoy this platform more than any other.

Which is fair enough but all the stuff that i could do on my Desire i could do quite easily on my BB's that ive had even moreso with the torch now. Sure it lacks the big screen so things dont look as nice as they would on the Desire but other than rooting etc...i cant see the advantages of having an Android over a BB in all honesty...ive got the latest leaked OS on my 9800 and have also installed hybrid versions of OS's on my past BB's

If its multimedia etc then the iphone4 fits that gap perfectly for me other than not being open enough but mine is jailbroken as it is so i can do a lot more things with it than a standard iphone can.

As i like to say each to their own...i wont be leaving BB's anytime soon as it does exactly what i need them to do ie emails and other communication that i need...id like them to have better hardware specs but not at the cost of a poor battery life though. But hopefully with the new Playbook coming out soon and the new QNX OS...things can only get better for BB as a whole...OS6 is a step in the right direction imo.

When I Jailbroke my iPhone Spawn, I noticed a lot of the Jailbreak stuff was absolutely horrible, the interfaces are dire and look unfinished and it removes a lot of the Apple 'polish' that makes the iPhone so popular.

Cydia is a laggy mess too.

Most people that Jailbreak an iPhone should have an Android phone instead.

Oh i agree totally that jailbreaking isnt exactly perfect but other than a few apps from there...most of it is absolute rubbish which i wouldnt dare put on my iphone as it is.

But i have about 4 apps from cydia that i find useful and they should have been things that apple SHOULD have put into the OS from the start...why apple doesnt get it in their thick skulls that hey its ok to be able to customise your iphone to how you want it is beyond me ie having a built in lockscreen which displays your texts, emails, missed calls etc etc wouldnt have been that hard surely.

Anyhow i hardly even boot up cydia now...i have the apps i need at the moment so i just leave it well alone.

Problem is that Android just isnt polished enough...i mean when i had the Desire and downloaded apps etc....half of the names of the apps didnt show properly ie were cut off....annoying and messy...i dont know if thats been rectified with the 2.2 version of Android.
