BlackBerry Torch

You expected long app names to endlessly consume the iconspace and screenspace? Not even Windows shows all characters of a long filename so that's not a valid argument.

Android is perfectly polished as well but debating it is like people debating who is prettier, Jessica Alba or Jessica Beil - It's all preference.

The crux of the situation is that on Android allows you to do more at the same time and with more control and if you don't like something then you simply change it either via a mod or an app.

Some people don't like that notion though, they prefer things to be their definition of awesome out of the box - which is fine - and I think a few people here are centred around the latter.

Also, Spawn, you've not even used Android 2.2 which does improve things somewhat and your experience is based on the earliest example of a next gen Android build and of course handset (the only other being the Nexus at the time).

How difficult:( I'll have to have a good play with a few and see which one I prefer.

For some reason I really don't want an iPhone, I don't know why really either as they seem okay. It will be a toss-up between the Torch and Desire I think, the desire will win if it does the blackberry stuff well (email, actually working properly etc), if not then it'll be the Torch.

Windows Mobile 7 would probably be an option too, except that I have a feeling it will be utter crap at everything.

Do you have a Gmail account? Things get even more easier and powerful if you're an avid Gmail (and all things Google like calendar, docs and so on) user.

You're right Khaaan!, with 2.2 and the new HTC Sense UI improvements, the Desire HD feels comfortably as polished as the iPhone 4 right out of the box imo.

Also, Gameloft have started making LOADS of games for Android now, good ones too, so that should pick up quickly.

Long app names??..right so why not cut it down like Iphone and BB does eh??...for me its a valid arguement simple as that...i hate having a cluttered homescreen with long app names when there is no need for it....why Android cant get that right or the devs for that matter is truly beyond me.

And your correct, its all about preference...i prefer the simplicity of the BB and apple platform over Android...ive had 2 Android handsets in the past 2 yrs and sure they were fun to use at the start but i soon got bored of them...which made me wonder why instead of using the Desire i kept going back to my BB 9700 which isnt half as powerful as the Desire but yet kept my interest far more with less apps;).

Different strokes for different folks...its one of the reasons why i say to people to go and try the handsets out for themselves if they can. Because not everyone is going to like the BB and the same goes for both Android and iphone. The only thing i like about Android is the hardware specs, they are droolworthy tbh.

Dont get me wrong im not saying the Desire or the other Android handsets are rubbish because they arent...im just saying they arent for me as other than the hardware specs i dont see what the hype is all about....and no im not into rooting as it seems like a long winded process from what i read of it.

There's a reason why the Desire had a long term being out of stock and it wasn't just because it had some beefy hardware but because the Android experience finally caught up with the polish levels iPhone and stuff just worked (and still does, even moreso now).

I guess our definition of "simplicity" is where the magic is. I consider BB/iPhone/lolSymbian to be simple, but illogical. I find Android is just mor elogical from where things are kept around the system to how things are managed and how it allows me to manage it how I want instead of being given a protocol that I have to stick by.

IMO your icon text argument is still invalid, though, Long names not showing fully doesn't clutter a single thing up and if you're using another launcher you can hide names entirely.

But since you like simple so much why didn't you just have a clean homescreen with only widgets and use the dock/apptray for icons?

My only real problem with the desire is the battery life, saying that I suppose I could get an in-car charger, as I'm out in the van most days..and apparently it has free, functioning sat-nav? Hmmm, win.

12v/AC charging can charge the phone from empty in under 2 hours so yeah do that :D

Satnav is very functional, I've done over 10,000 miles using it :)

I can upgrade my 18 month orange bb8900 in beginning of April. Very happy so far with my BB, is the torch still the best BB to go for ? really liked my 8900 apart from the couple of times orange had to replace it as my ball got dirt behind it.

Bought a Torch last week on o2, my first Blackberry and I have to say its impressive but i`m coming from a Nokia E63. Did think about the HTC Desire and the HD version but battery power seemed to be a big issue for most folk I spoke to. It was a logical choice in the end as I do a bit of facebook, some browsing etc but e-mail on the move is by far the most important for me. Not really that bothered about playing games on a phone. The apps for Blackberry are not as good as Android and probably iOS as well but so far I`ve found stuff of use.

The Torch is pretty good but after having mine since Nov, im selling mine as i just got a brand new Bold 9780 from Voda as my upgrade...tbh as much as i loved the torch, i just found it a bit too taxing at times...the keyboard is good but not as good as the 9780.

Personally and this is my opinion...the bold 9780 is a much better phone mainly because of the keyboard and the screen for me altho much smaller is far more sharper than the torch...only thing ill miss about the torch is the touchscreen but its not that much that im keeping it.

Still a decent handset but honestly id recommend the 9780...i have the white one and its really nice.

Can some of you guys test something,

When I tested this out yesterday on my work's Torch if you make a call with the phone open and put it to your ear the screen more often than none does NOT turn off via the sensor - This has resulted in speakerphone, hold etc being activated via the screen button from your ear touching those buttons.

It happens on several of the many Torches we have here and is rather an annoying issue. That and the handset randomly freezing every now and then. These are sim free Torches BTW and are on our BES.

Mine when doing that works perfectly fine....mind you i updated my OS from the one it came with...

Hop on over to Crackberry.com and have a butchers on the forums!!.. everything you need to know is there!!! :)

Got my Torch almost a week ago - hugely impressed for far. Coming from Android (which I grew to loathe) its fantastic. The battery life on my Milestone was appalling (even with auto-kill turned on) - so far the Torch lasts 3 days with reasonable use, which is perfect for me. Keyboard is nice, although it takes a day or two to get used to. The whole package is much slicker - I found Android felt like a continual beta with things crashing (including the dialer during calls) and some very low quality apps.
