Well it depends on what you really want and need.
I have one for work, but it's also great for everything else I need that's not work related.
Weigh up the cost of it against what you'll use it for and it's purpose compared to other phones.

If you want to use it for email then its great for that ... only good for a little internet browsing. Blackberry's have way better battery life (almost like a normal mobile phone) than smartphones like the iPhone or Android which most of them needs charging daily.

Do any of your friends have Blackberrys? If so, get one. My girlfriend has one and is always BBM'ing her mates. She says its great.
I have my iPhone (which I prefer), but the BBM is cool for keeping in touch with mates.

Absolutely FA to do with that
...BBM is pretty useful especially if you have friends and family that are overseas ie like a lot of my BB friends and my brother who uses a BB...its a great way of staying in touch without having to worry about stupidly high sms charges and phone bills.Personally i couldnt be without my BBM but then i couldnt be without my BB as it is...i have the iphone4 which has a similar app called whatsapp but thats far too flakey...every so often it goes down whereas BBM has never stopped in the past 2 yrs ive been using BB devices.
As for the OP...BB's are no longer seen as purely business devices...they have some decent multimedia capabilities and with OS6, the newest OS for BB's they have come a very long way from being just business devices. If your serious about getting one then id go for the 9700 but the new updated 9780 will be out soon so might as well plump for that as it will have OS6, 9700 runs OS5 at the moment...the 9780 will have 512mb of RAM compared to the 256mb of RAM the 9700 has at the moment...and finally 9780 has a 5mp camera whereas the 9700 has a 3.2mp camera.

Extremely good if you want to email a lot, have a portable calendar, use BBM with your mates. Main thing is email, as it always has been.
They're not so great for web browsing, I'd go down the iPhone route for that. I'm not a fan of touchscreens for lots of typing though which is why I picked the BB for email.
Battery life is fine, you just need to be aware that if WiFi is set to On, it is always On, so it will drain your battery quickly. I get several days out of mine without WiFi on, so it's more than acceptable. I've got an 8900 by the way, I like its compactness

.Depends on your useage...on my 9700 i usually get a day and half use out of it but then i use it pretty hard ie emailing, calls, texts and BBM.

Well my 9700 always has WIFI set to on but it only connects to my home WIFI as i dont allow to to search...but i havent noticed that big a difference between having it on or having it off....if i hardly use my BB, which is highly unlikely then i can easily get 5+ days use out of it but as i use it a lot i get around a day and half use out of it....just make sure you have Bluetooth off and dont let the WIFI actively search etc.
Good device....curve series are one of RIMS best sellers and now with 3G its even better and yep it should run OS6...still waiting for the 9700 to get its first leak of OS6 myself.
I had a work provided 8800 back in '07 and My dad just got a 9700, it's fine for dealing with high volumes of emails, and shines with enterprise integration, but Blackberry OS is showing its age now and isn't in the same league as even a low end Android touchscreen phone for presentation, usability and utility.
Battery life and call quality are great, but personally I wouldn't swap my Android phone now if you paid me.

Is OS6 coming to the 9700 officially?
im in the same ball park really, looking at the 8900 or 3g or 8520, first 2 are £20 a month for a decent deal, im tempted towards the 8900 at the minute.
one thing im not sure about, if i get this on say £20 a month orange (100 mins, unlimited texts/internet) will i then have to pay extra to get blackberry data package for the likes of BBM?

Yes it is, just waiting for the first release of OS6
RIM arent in the business to make OS's like Android or iphone FACT...if they wanted to they easily could but they wont because why would they move to something else when their OS's work perfectly fine for what they do??....BB's are great either in the corporate environment or in the non corporate environment. Whereas Android isnt a tried and tested OS in the corporate world and neither is the iphone OS...not really sure where Android is regarding the corporate environment but any business/corporation worth its salt will issue their employees with BB's rather than iphones or Androids.
What RIM are trying to do is merge both multimedia and business sides of their OS which has resulted in OS6...which is much much better than anything they have put out before...obviously as time goes on it will be improved much further then there will be an OS7 which RIM are currently working on...i know this because my brother works very closely with RIM...in fact he was one of the first beta testers for the 9800 torch himself.
Anyhow it really depends on what you need for your use...if its communication ie emails, texts etc etc then i cant see anything past the BB tbqh...multimedia is definitely the domain of the iphone and the Android for me fills in the other gaps...again not quite sure where it fits into the whole mobile game...and yes ive owned a few Android phones and yes they are nice but i soon got very bored of them.
