Blizzard adds DX11 to WoW

*Sigh*

Direct X 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 whatever, all of them, are Microsofts graphics API that allows HW acceleration to occur on your GPU. Where Direct X stands out over something like opengl it has tons of useful functionality bolted in that otherwise would take developer time to produce. This is particularly useful for small indie developers who dont have the resources to spare.

1) Bolting DX(n+1) into a game does not mean improved visuals. Efficiency asside, the game has to actively support new features which in some cases can mean a substantial engine alteration.

2) Developers, as in a proper multinational like Blizzard, should be writting their own engine code not relying on microsofts output. Do you really want to get the industry into the position of saying 'Oh, what functionality does this game have? I dont know, lets ask microsoft, yay!' and 'MS, can we have this super cool feature next year?' - 'no'

you should probably remember that the average age of PC gamers are 28, and I really doubt most jobless kids can manage the monthly sub.

Going off on a tangent a bit, but I'm sure it was 32 a few years ago, with the age expected to increase each year.

As to the water, its pretty iffy. Is Gulf of Mexico a zone in Cataclysm?

Never have played, never will, but surely a big company like Blizzard should be encouraging people to advance their own hardware by implementing new features/graphics. If so many people have no need to update, they won't and that slows development of pretty much everything else.

I think wows graphics are functional but the game needs to be coded better. I dont like the DX11 water as it doesnt suit the rest of the game, it doesnt even look that good.

Excuse me while I don my flamesuit, but I reckon its one of the best looking games out there. Technically its stone age, but if you look at it from an artistic viewpoint, the design and architecture and use of colour is pretty astonishing in places. Visually its got more character than almost any game I've ever played.

Blizzard's art dept are the best in the business - no question.

I always really liked WoW artstyle when I played between 2005-2007. It does however look like the game in general has gone down hill since.

I think late night STV roaming was awesome, really cool zone.

I think wow still looks great for its age and I was actually really impressed with the shadows on it. The water update would be great and cata will give it a nice little update.

People complain that WoW's graphics aren't the most mind numbingly awesome ever, but Blizzard make up for it with superb gameplay, this is why it's one of the most successful game's ever.

If you want a piece of art buy a painting. You buy WoW to play a game, not to play it not fap over it's graphics.

Some people do actually take time out to fap over its character screen graphics. :p

they are not going to massively update graphics as it will shorten the amount of people that can play it.

remember, a lot of WOWs customer base are teenage jobless losers who cant afford to buy anything better than a pentium 3.

lol, love it :)
