Blizzard's Real-ID system and the OcUK forums

It's about the stage people seem at with me, where I'm being stalk in work because I'm so busy, stalked on FB because people miss me from WOW and because they want copies of the book I'm doing, and stalked by random others because they just want help. :(

Awww, some of us just do it because you look hot in the shower :o:)

then go sign up to the blizzard forums and troll them, then watch this poor blokes fb get destroyed :p

Haha I could do, but I think I'm still pretty easy to find, I guess just typing it in to Facebook will find my actual profile, but at least the google search kinda puts them off the trail.
I think my profile is all private anyway, so not much can be done there anyways.

Silly idea. Just plain silly.

But it's what you expect with their ham fisted approach to most things "hey there's a fly on the table" "OMFG NUKE THE DAMN TABLE!!!!!!!"

I would pack in any forums thatcwent with real id. I don't particularly say anything I wouldn't in the outside world but it's good to be able to talk through things in annoymity without having to worry about putting your foot in it.

I don't think it'll make much difference to the real trolls.

However for a lot of people I can see it really putting them off posting if it means their real name is going to be displayed (I could actually see it being a major privacy issue if Blizzard enacted it retroactively*).

Certainly not something I'd like to see on here, and it wouldn't be practical on here either (as you don't have to have a shop account to be registered on the forums, or even if you have a shop account to link it to your forums name).

*I'm assuming Blizzard probably link forum accounts to game accounts, which would give them peoples names.

I use KaHn for most of my online things, or KaHnie.

Think this site is the only one which links it to anything via the Trust system, but then that's only to my hotmail addy and full name which doesn't give much (considering if you google my name its a profesional photographer who comes up first)

KaHn

Having just read the thread where someone has sluethed lots of probable details for the Blizzard employee this definitely seems like a crackers idea. As others have said I occasionally have given advice here that I wouldn't have given under anything but a pseudonym. There are also threads I have posted about some personal stuff that I wouldn't want to be googleable.

The Mods on here do a pretty good job of cracking down on bad stuff... so what would we gain on here from doing this?

Please no I'm still trying to recover from the many keyboard beatings I've recieved from the more determined OcUK members if you release my name the lazy ones might track me down!

I don't get how you can be against it when you're on a forum that displays your real name? I can't imagine Blizzard bothering with any kind of check that it's your real name so you're free to put whatever you like if you really don't want people to know.

Its a stupid idea its not going to change the trolls. The whole idea is based on a presumption that the reason people get up to stuff on the internet is because their anonymous.

Its not its only because people think they are anonymous and arent actually physically at the place where they cause the disruption so they never feel or see the cause of their actions.

Trolls arent going to care if someone knows their generico name and is able to track them or anything. But they are going to love it when they can use that person real name in just simple insults, if that doesnt work then maybe using simple search methods they'll insult your family members. The easier it is the more likely they are to do it.

There are a hundred reasons why its not a good idea, some not even realised yet. It wont change anything it will likely make it worse.

*Hasn't read entire thread*

I'd be against it, there's no need to expose people in that sort of way. It wouldn't change behaviour either, people act like arses, trolls or put relationship threads up because they're anonymous. If they don't know anybody here, this won't change a thing irrespective if their name 'John Smith' is displayed.
