Blocked access - what can I do?

We rent the garage for our property which only has rear access by way of a communal driveway between two properties. Some idiot insists on parking their vehicle on the driveway, preventing access to a number of properties. I have left numerous polite notices on the windscreen explaining that I am unable to use my garage and that it's a fire safety issue but the car returns time after time.

Any sensible suggestions on how to tacke this? I don't know who the owner is or where they live but I suppose my next move should be talking to them, which means knocking on doors.

What options do I have if they continue to block the access?

Get a picture of the car parked in the wrong place next time you see it. Try and get it on a couple of occasions so you have some evidence should this procede any further than a friendly "Can I have a word?" :)

Have it towed off the property? Check with all the people who have a right to use the area ( ie houses that may have a right to use it ) and if its not one of them, then the car is illegally parked on private property and can be towed away. The local coucil will maybe do this if you inform them that someone has abandonded a car in a comunal driveway. Just say its been there a few days or something. The owner will soon the get message.

its a communual driveway to two garages owned by seperate people? if so maybe get a locked gate fitted on the driveway? or something
else do as AtreuS says, get it towed if it aint the other neighbours car or something.

First of all, you should find out who owns the car. Take photos of it parked there and make sure you get the registration in the photo. When you find out who owns the car have a word with him/her and explain to them that their car is blocking access to garages that residents pay to use. And that you've left notes for him/her and they've gone unnoticed. I wouldn't hesitate to get the car towed if it continues.

Or you can:

Slash his tires and use paintstripper on the bodywork.

Then that will get you in trouble, I would suggest asking the people around you if they know who it is, if not its probably annoying them as well, with the extra support just get it towed.

Yeah that too. Personally I would recommend you use a thermite bomb to melt a hole through his engine block!

Careful there young'un, you might lose your keys in the blast radius.

(before any one gets pedantic I know thermite doesnt produce a blast)

Assuming the driveway is private property (and only meant for use by the houses with garages), and the car does not belong to the other user of the driveway, possibly put up a sign stating it is private property, and vehicles parked on it without permission will be clamped? (then a few weeks down the line if it's still a problem buy a cheapish clamp and use it - charging the cost of the clamp for removal).

I beleive blocking access to the queens highway is a minor offence under one of the Road Traffic Acts, so if you've got a car stuck behind the parked one, and because of that cannot get it onto the road you can ring the police (local station/area call center, but NOT 999) and ask them to contact the owner - they can and probably will do it if you're nice.

Unfortunately blocked access routes on private property can be a pig to sort out :(
We share a right of way/access to off road parking with several neighbours and one of them was being a bit of a PITA about it - parking in front of our garage because he didn't want to bother with putting his car away, it took about 4 letters from the solicitor pointing out (in words of three syllables or less) that that was not on, and that a court order would be taken out if need be.

Clamping is now illegal - unless done by qualified people (licenced by SIA)
simplest way would be a security post or gate...
