blocking bit comet

my housemate is running bit comet and causes a slowdown how can i block bit comet so i can use the net.we have a netgear wgr614 v6 i know there are ports 6881 to 6999 used but when i block those i still get a slowdown which makes using the net too slow...

Three words. Quality Of Service, AKA QoS. Set that up on your router and it'll stop him hogging all the connection. It might not be available in the web meue in which case you need to enable telnet if not on by default and telnet in.

Im not ceratin on this, but with bit comet you can choose what port to run on, which can make blocking it out fully virtually impossible.

Have, you got uPNP running on the router? Try disabling it tbh, I don't think you can get QoS on that router :\.

Which is why you'd use some kind of layer 7 arrangement to filter out the torrent traffic, which is what Skilldibop was hinting at.

Best way that could be done is by sticking a box between the Router and the Modem.

Low end machine with two network ports, setup in your network like
--[Modem]----[Box]----[Router]-----[Clients]
Linux should do the job, although you can use windows with something like Bandwidth Manager instead.

I reccomend smoothwall with the QOS module. Its free and does exactly what you want. You need any old P1 with 64mb ram and 2 nic's. Its soooo easy.

Sorry but seriously, I don't think the solution to this is technical. Can't you just talk to him and ask that, if he must leech porn and warez, he does it when everyone else is our or in bed?

If not, I second the suggestion of a Linux box acting as your gateway. Block everything but port 80. That oughta do it

*Ahem* FTP, HTTPS, Games........not the most flexibe/practicle of plans.

QoS keeps everyone happy, he gets to DL when he likes and everyone can browse happily. The solution isn't always "kill it dead". on a 1meg connection set the max burstable to 75-80% of the connection and max sustained to 50-60%. That way short DLs will get near full speed, long torrents will only take half the bandwidth away from you. Most routers support this, even my Speedtouch 510 does. But as before, and like my speedtouch, the web app doesn't have the reature- you need to telnet the LAN ip of the router in hyperterminal or CMD.exe

For a 2 meg connection you can give more to burst as you need only a few KB/s for browsing, 100KB/s for games max.

I just logged into my router via telnet, a feature I never knew it had, its not mentioned anywhere lol.

How did you go about finding it?

the IOS vaires greatly so you need to ? like hell till you've investigated nearly all the menus.

Edit: i just read that post properly. Your probably meaning Telnet isn't mentioned anywhere in the docs. *slaps face*

what router do you have by chance? have you had a look for some additional toys to what you get on http?

We love telnet, you can telnet ANYTHING

yeah ADSL2+

I must be on the only exchange in london UKO hasn't put anything in yet. Can't even get 12.5meg. What makes it workse is i'm near the exchange and i have Brand spanking new copper to the green box cos clever lighting people in their cherry picker sliced my local loop in twoo.
Thus i stand to get quite good transfer rates

When the UKO truck eventually arrives.
Though i'll have to loose my trusty 510v4 that has been bullet proof for so many years :*(

Hehe. I am moving to manchester next month, and I am about 700 metres as the row flies from their central exchange, as long as the line is good I should get some good speeds. Dont like having to buy and use their router though. I want a draytek for vpn etc.
