Quick Question.

my newphew has run up £120 on Sky interactive, games and competions on my mums latest phone bill.

Is it possible for me to block this feature?

Try pressing the button on the remote that says services and see if the channels can be restricted within there.

I found the easiest way was unplugging it from a phone line, you dont need it connected.
Correct you only need the phone line plugged in if you want to order a film or other stuff.

you only need the phone line connected for the first 12 months of your contract or if you have multi room.

How can they ever find out?

they send a signal over the satalite to tell your box to phone home, if the box doesnt phone home then the phoneline is not connected.

I know contractually you should have it plugged in for the first 12 months - but im pretty sure you can just unplug it as soon as the sky installer has left the house.

His box has a multiroom connection, I have had in unpluged and got letters from sky stating if i dont reconnect the phone line, thell charge the multiroom as a full subscriptions.

I have email sky and waiting for a responce from them.

I havent needed it to order from Sky Box Office

I unplugged mine very shortly after getting Sky, havent had any problems so far.

As suggested above I suppose. I had a customer who was querying bank account activity, and was furious when I read out the Sky direct debit amount; they had fined her for removing her phone cable, although she hadn't! Although I think it's quite rare for them to actually find out and enforce that part of the contract, it does happen however.

Ah but have you checked your bill to see if you were ever charged for the stuff you ordered. Cos I was mightily annoyed when I suddenly had an extra 30 quid on a bill the month after I had to have a replacement box. It was because the phone line had been plugged back in and the box had told sky I had ordered all the stuff and then charged me for it in one go.
Was not happy!

But you did use services that were are chargeable though, so it's justified in them doing so?

On a slightly different note. If I want to have Sky installed It'd have to be in my front room, as that's where my big TV set-up is. However, there's no phone socket in there, it's at the back of the house. How would Sky handle that? I know for a fact that I'm not having telephone cabling going from the front to the back of the house.
