Blocking Sky Interactive

On a slightly different note. If I want to have Sky installed It'd have to be in my front room, as that's where my big TV set-up is. However, there's no phone socket in there, it's at the back of the house. How would Sky handle that? I know for a fact that I'm not having telephone cabling going from the front to the back of the house.

You could have the box at that end of the house, but have a portable sensor thing in the room with the TV for changing the channels I think. I know a friend who had something similar I'm sure.

**Edit: Hmm, I can't seem to find any details about it. Perhaps it was all a dream...

**Edit 2: Yes I can http://www.sailgb.com/p/remote_eye_for_sky_digiboxes/
But I'm not sure if it's compatible with the latest boxes.

Why? They do a very good job in tidying the cable up for you. Very professional on the two times it's been installed in my house.

I found the easiest way was unplugging it from a phone line, you dont need it connected.

Actually you do, my girlfriends parents got a letter from sky demanding that they plug it back in or they'd get a fine.

But you did use services that were are chargeable though, so it's justified in them doing so?
My dear by then EXboyfriend had been ordering WWF wrestling at stupid o clock and kindly forgot to tell me, the box broke after he left and so it was only after he left that I was billed for stuff I never watched.

I've had my phone line disconnected for about 2 years.

I cancelled with multiroom, then resubscribed about 6 months later with a normal contract.

Haven't had any letters yet...

they only care about multiroom really, this is to ensure the box is at the same property and you're not giving it anyone else cheaply

Well both your anger and actions are understandable then! Never got the wrestling thing personally.

On Sky box goto - Services > Parental Controls > Other Restrictions and set "PIN entry before going online" to on.

Problem solved.
I have the full barrage of "other restrictions" turned on - especially "spending restriction" and the spending limit set to £0.00. No children here, but I don't want stuff happening without my knowledge. :)

If you pay sky ~£20 they'll let you have it unplugged. People saying you won't get sky etc are talking out their arse.

My first year of sky I had it unplugged as a phone line wasn't practical and they said it was fine as long as I paid the charge.

When you buy sky the installation is free.
However under the terms and conditions you have to have the phone line connected to the box for 12 months.
There is no systems requirement to have this connection - Sky will work without it, it is just in the terms & conditions.

If you do not want the phoneline connected to the box then you will need to pay for the installation - this is £50 for a standard install.
However there is extra depending on extra cable rund, height of the dish etc

If you decide to go for the free installation and then disconnect the box from the phone line you are in breach of your contract.
Sky can (and will - they have done on numerous occasions) write to you or phone you and ask that the phone be reconnected to your box.
Refusal to do so and they will bill you for the initial installation, refuse to pay this and Sky or more than happy to hand the debt over to a collection agency.
You wouldn't have an argument - you're in breach of contract.

How do they know?
The box will try and call home at random times - Sky can quite easily find out which boxes are not plugged into the phone line.

Have you looked into the Parental Controls under Sky?
I wouldn't be surprised if there is a way of PIN protecting online/Interactive content.

lol about the unplugging. we have had sky for a good few years and have never plugged the phone line in!

never recieved a letter or anything! wierd as some people do

My folks kept getting letters telling them to plug in the phone or they'd get fined. Thing was, t'was plugged in. Several engineer visits later, turned out the box was faulty and wasn't calling home when it was supposed to....

Replacement box had the same fault...

Box no.3 is fine, never had another letter since....

We have had Sky for a year and never had it plugged in. WE have also used Sky Box Office and you can go up to 50 pounds worth of credit before it needs plugging in. You don't get billed until you plug the telephone cable in so you could have watched 10 films in January and have to pay whenever you plug it in. If you dont plug it in... FREE FILMS :)

But only 10 free films. Its hardly unlimited.

Had multiple letters from my Multi-room subscription telling me to plug my phone line back in.

it ended up the box was faulinty, but they also threatened to charge us and then even had to pay for the new box!

The swines!!

With Multiroom it's not a 12 month contract to have the boxes connected to the phone line it's a permanent one so you can't flog the matching subscription to the bloke up the street and split the cost of subscription.

Means the OP can't disconnect the box without getting in trouble.

There's options in the Parental Control section of the services menu which can stop people going online without the PIN and you can restrict spending as well.

Never had my Sky plugged into the telephone line.

Never had any hassle from Sky. But then I dont subscribe to the movie channels.
