Afternoon all, I need to block internet access to that popular auction site on a work PC. A colleague is wasting far too much time on it and not on work!
So, what is the best way? The PC is running Win XP and is on a work network. I dont want to limit access to the site to the other machines on the network, just the one machine.

Thanks.

Change the HOSTS file to redirect everything going to ebay.co.uk to 127.0.0.1 (or any other IP for that matter)

Burnsy

then remove write permissions from C drive so he cant change it back.

he shouldnt be storing data on local volumes anyway, thats what network storage is for.

Speak to HR and ask them to have a word would be my suggestion...
You are singling out one person from your company and yet not stopping anyone else doing the same thing which could be a can of worms in this day and age of discrimination etc...

The other PC's need to ooccasionally access the site for legitimate work, but he is listing his own stuff and managing his account.

If I just blocked the http://signin part of things, could he still browse the site but be unable to log in and trade?

God does no one talk to each other these days? Does no one bother to talk to their boss these days?

It's just like those threads about stopping your kid from using their computer past 9pm.

I think that the I.T. like to hide away in their office all day and do everything remotley without coming into contact with anyone. At least thats how it has been at every school I've been to. :p

Seriously 3 I.T staff in a school with under 80 computers, they just sit in their office everyday never ever coming out except to bring food in from the cafeteria.

Uh, even if you do that stuff, can't he just use a proxy?

As I understand, its nigh impossible to block websites these days.

Instead of physically stopping him, monitor, warn and dismiss.

Absolute nonsense

Corporate network, using single connection,

Then blocking it at router level, system level (with no admin rights for user) or on the corportate proxy would put an end to his shenanigans.

If he does come up with some ingenious way of circumventing it then get him fired.

Can I ask though, is this your job to control what he does and doesnt have access to? or is it just annoying you cos he is tossing it off and your working hard all day?

If it isnt your job, then I strongly recommend you leave it to those whose job it si and just report it to your manager or HR dept.

If it is your job, then haul him in to a private office, tell him it has to stop NOW and if it doesnt then sack him.

So just connect to an outside unknown proxy, forwarding all ebay content onward. Its easily done.

what happens if the only internet connection is to the proxie ?

if the network has no connectivity, and the proxie is the only one with the connection, theres no way round it.

Surely you can just type ebay into a proxy on the inernet and it will come straight through no different than browsing another website.

http://grab.cc/

If you can access a site like that, of which there are many, you can get onto ebay.

So unless you have

a) limited access to a specific list of IPs
or
b) made a list of all the proxies on the internet (impossible)

you cannot block it.
