How many people do it? Does it hurt? Is the free food good?

I'm going on Tuesday :D I'm not really concerned at the pain aspect, I've never really been worried about needles; no im not a smack user :p I'm more complexed about the process!

Nope doesn't hurt, you don't get free food. You get a cup or tea/coffee/sqaush and a biscuit.
You can then go down the pub have 3 pints and be on your back, very good cheap night.

You go in and feel a form out. As it's your first time, you will see the nurse who goes through the form. Explains the process and then pricks your finger. The nurse will then take a drop of blood in a glass tube and drop it into a solution. Timing it's decent, if it's to slow that means your Anemic and can't donate blood. If everythings fine, you'll go and wait before being lead to a bed where you lie down. They stick a needle in your arm, again as it's your first time they will probably stay with you. They also only take about 1/2 a pint on the first time and just use the blood to do tests on. Like finding blood group out.

That's interesting to know, so to really make a difference you ought to go twice or more? If that's the case I'm surprised it isn't publicised better

The whole idea is you go every 6 months not just once. Once you've been once you get inundated with blood donor letters. If you don't attend every 6months.

If you're Anemic your blood will float (or lack of iron), veggies have this problem aswell, also if you haven't eaten before hand your blood will fall slower.

What does enemic mean?
Anemic I've edited it. If your anemic you have a low iron and hence low red blood cell level. Girls are much more likely to be anemic than men.

I don't have that problem I obviously eat to much meat. The last 3 times they haven't had time to start the stop watch before it's hit the bottom :D

it's every 4 months...

do it and feel proud :)

Not technically true AH,

wiki said:
Anemia (AmE) or anæmia/anaemia (BrE), from the Greek (Ἀναιμία) (an-haîma) meaning "without blood", is a deficiency of red blood cells (RBCs) and/or hemoglobin. This results in a reduced ability of blood to transfer oxygen to the tissues, causing tissue hypoxia. Since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences. Hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein in the red blood cells) has to be present to ensure adequate oxygenation of all tissues and organs. The three main classes of anemia include excessive blood loss (acutely such as a hemorrhage or chronically through low-volume loss), excessive blood cell destruction (hemolysis) or deficient red blood cell production (ineffective hematopoiesis). In menstruating women, dietary iron deficiency is a common cause of deficient red blood cell production.

Anemia is the most common disorder of the blood. There are several kinds of anemia, produced by a variety of underlying causes. Anemia can be classified in a variety of ways, based on the morphology of RBCs, underlying etiologic mechanisms, and discernible clinical spectra, to mention a few.

There are two major approaches of classifying anemias, the "kinetic" approach which involves evaluating production, destruction and loss[1], and the "morphologic" approach which groups anemia by red blood cell size. The morphologic approach uses a quickly available and cheap lab test as its starting point (the MCV). On the other hand, focusing early on the question of production may allow the clinician more rapidly to expose cases where multiple causes of anemia coexist.

I've been once :D

But it actually made me feel like i've made a difference.

going again just before christmas i think it is :D

when the guy put the needle in my arm it hurt a little bit but once the intial pain is gone its fine.

they took a whole pint from me first time :D

Makes me proud to have a blood donor card :D

Thought they did it in your left arm?

they can do it in either arm. the arm rests on the side of the bed are moveable :)
i have rubbish thin veins - it often takes 2 or 3 goes for one of the nurses to find one that'll work!
men with big arms and fat veins are the easiest and fastest donors - people like me with small arms and weedy veins take ages!

lmao, i can see the veins in my arms so if the nurse misses i will demand a non-retarded nurse! :p

can you feel the blood flowing out (like a sortof cold stream?)

or nothing at all?

How long does it take? Does the needle hurt more than the ***** on the finger?

I always give left armed. They cant find a vein in my right arm :D. It doesnt hurt, you dont need the local anaesthetic. Best way to give to charity, just drink plenty of water and a sugary drink afterwards and before. Something like dr pepper does me. Ive given roughly 17-18 times and you really are making a difference. They are always low on stocks of blood.
