Blu-ray Victorious

In what way? All and more features of a standalone player, plus the ability to upgrade firmware, rip blu-ray disks and burn them as well.

the problems with playing back discs, the problems with getting hd audio outputs, the problems with HDCP even for people who have fully hdcp compliant hard ware, the poor state the the software players are in, the length of time it takes for them to sort the problems out, the problems associated with hdcp and dual displays.......

there's a great big list of problems and it can be a right headache. you say pc's have more features? i have a htpc with a bluray and a hd-dvd reader. i have a Xonar D2 7.1 soundcard that has fantastic analogue outputs. some discs wont play, others wont play without problems, 7.1 otuputs have their channels swapped around, i cant get hd audio outpus from powerdvd, arcsoft total media theatre has even more problems that powerdvd does, and doesnt work on vista 64. powerdvd wont work at all unless i use anydvdHD to defeat the hdpc, despite me being fully compliant. nero showtime doesnt work with my tv as the second display at all, and swaps the channel around.

compare that, to put disc in >> ps3 turns on >> movie plays....every time.

like i said, right now, its not a serious option.

It was all over for HD DVD when Warner went Blu ray exclusive.

However...

The fact that a home movie format led primarily by the sales penetration of a games console has "won" .. tells us something quite striking about home movie purchasing.

Firstly its common knowledge that DVD rental is in decline, as are DVD sales....

and that the market as a wide demographic & not just gamers and gadget led technophiles did not buy into HD movies.

As far as Hollywood is concerned Blu ray is no answer to flagging sales, and as a fact the Fat lady does indeed sing the blues.

Very true they have made no announcement :p

But just announced.. that they have made no announcement ...yet :D

Toshiba shares jumped 5% with the possibility of dumping High Def Optical.

analysts must know theres no money in next gen movie formats.

.

How do you manage to get so many problems? I just rip and play with mpc with no problems.

im not the only person who has problems with discs. far from it! hows your 7.1 HD audio btw?
Surely for 7.1 hd you need a new amp anyway, I find dd or dts perfectly acceptable.
Touch wood, I am yet to have any problems playing discs. I had one hiccup with hdcp when AMD made the cat 7.12 none hdcp but otherwise fine. HD-DVD dieing is a shame because they were region free but people will concentrate on multiregion blue ray players now.

I don't use hd audio as I only have a coax cable, I don't think I'd be able to hear a difference on my meagre 5.1 £400 sound setup anyway. :p

no, i own an onkyo tx-sr805 which is a very capable amp and can deal with 7.1 inputs. are you saying the problems dont matter because they dont affect you?

thats convenient for you, but i bet you'd be saying different if your dialog was coming from your rear left speaker:p

I'd imagine ffdshow would be able to correct that if using mpc, there's loads of options for audio channels and stuff. I use it to convert stereo to 5.1.

it does, but then regular dvd will be swapped because you've swapped the channels around. its a pain in the arse, believe me lol.

yes, but also surely it's not that big a deal, there's a sound card with full hd to be released soon and motherboards are available (but no software support yet)
I tend to put more weight on my own experience as you don't really know about other's setups.

we are yet to see whether the hdmi addon for the prelude will be hdmi1.2/1.3 compliant, but even LPCM would be great. here's hoping. as far as motherboards go, its more of a case of the hardware doesnt support it. yes they can do 5.1Dd/DTS just fine, but that totally defeats the point of using hdmi for sound in the first place lol.

thats fair enough. all im saying, is that people who actually want to take advantage of hd material are suffering for it. such as those having to use anydvd just to get the films playing, even though we all have compliant devices and totally legit discs.

I suppose you could always use hdmi if the sound card is the problem.

not untill there is something with hdmi released for the pc that can do something more than regular 5.1 DD/DTS, no.

at any rate, the sound is a drop in the ocean compared to the numerous general problems people are having just playing the films.

The psp only supported memory stick pro duo, so people had no choice other than to buy those cards, despite sd being the mainstream format..

I dont think sd was available in the required sizes at that point - but I may be wrong

Either way I was under the impression that you meant every format was forced onto us, which was the main point I was disagreeing with

I have to concur with James here, I had the same issues trying an htpc with fully compiant hardware - it was just too much of a pain to use (and this was with an x360 hd-dvd drive and PowerDvd), too much of a headache

Thats why I invested in a HD-E1 first off and now have an EP35, until the pc software is much better I wont go near it again

just read the article you linked

whats even more amusing is its content

Toshiba said:
no decision has been made at this moment

what decision is this then ? the decision on whether to drop HD-DVD and give up ? the decision that you've supposedly not made ?? lol

even if they havent announced it, the board just confirmed they're considering it. If they're considering it, its death is certainly nigh.

Maybe not now, but soon.
