blue green ?

can any1 tell me whats the difference between the western digital blue and the green.

i am lookin to get a new hdd but not sure which to get, i have been told to keep away from the green but no idea y, i only have about £90 to spend on 1 at the mo so will add another if poss at a later date.

The Green drives are pretty much what they say. Lower spin speed, lower energy consumption, lower transfer speeds, cooler and quieter. Generally suitable for data storage.

The Blue drives have a faster spin speed, higher energy consumption, faster transfer speeds, run a bit hotter and noisier. More suitable as OS drives.

Are you desperately in need of a HDD because the prices at the moment are shocking?

At OcUK a 1TB drive is around £100. 10 days ago they were around £45.

A 2TB drive is around £140. 10 days ago they were around £65.

£90 now will buy you a 500GB drive at OcUK

Hopefully in a few months HDD prices will get back towards the level we're used to.

Only buy a HDD now if you really, really need it and shop around for the best price you can get.

Drives are available from some places where the prices haven't gone up quite so much.

thanks for the reply, yeah i really need 1 as i have just about finished my new build and thats all i need, just my luck the prices have gone up and no doubt as i buy 1 they will fall again tested my system out with a old 160gb 1 and seem to be gettin the blue screen of death and just hoping that a the new drive will help sort it out, as not had any probs with the vista on last 1 before the whole system went pop hehehe

Are you trying to run your old Windows installation on your new PC?

You'll likely get all sorts of errors doing that due to the different drivers required.

A fresh installation of Windows onto the old HDD may tide you over until (hopefully) prices fall again.

its vista ultimate 64 on to a formatted hdd and havin no end of problems with update, so do you think a new drive and a clean install should sort things out ?

Did you do a fresh Windows installation for your new PC or have you just plugged in the drive from your old PC with Windows already installed?

If you haven't done a fresh installation on your new PC then you should try that first using the old HDD.

I'm trying to see if you can avoid paying £90 for a HDD that would have been about £30 10 days ago.

it was a old drive, once in i entered bios then booted from disc then farmatted then installed, on updates just not havin it did about half which would be about 60 of 120, loads i know, i will pay up to £90 if need be i have found some 1tb at about £70

Why don't you try installing the updates a few at a time and see what happens.

Are you sure that everyting else is working as it should so that if there is a problem it's the HDD?

What are the specs. of your new system?

i am pretty sure that all else is fine, i suppose i can try a few at a time really buggin me now, plus i do need a bigger hdd

The only thing with that setup is to make sure the RAM voltage isn't too high as that can cause problems.

Other than that if the HDD is causing problems, or just isn't large enough, then get a new one. It just pains me the price they are at the moment. Look around and get the best deal you can.

You can check the voltage in the BIOS. It should show you what it's currently set at and you need to check the specification for your particular RAM to see what it needs.

As far as current HDD prices go £55 for a 750GB drive looks pretty good. As it's 7,200RPM I assume it's a Caviar Blue?

Those are £135 at OcUK.

If you need a HDD and can genuinely get one for £55 then go for it.

i just checked and the voltage is at 1.5 for the ram and the drive is at our friends in the jungle, if you know what i mean lol

What's the correct voltage for your particular RAM? Some of the G.Skill Sniper only needs 1.25V.

oh, not too sure on that, the packaging says 1.5 on it is there somewhere i can find out for sure ?

If the packaging says 1.5 then it should be 1.5.

You can find your RAM on the G.Skill website to be sure.
