Bluescreen in game causes bluescreen on boot.

Hi guys, I have a bit of an issue that has apparently randomly occurred.

Specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
4GB RAM (2 sticks)
2x 1TB Drives (one has Windows and the majority of my documents, one has various videos archived on it.)
ATI HD4850 512MB
Gigabyte MA770T-UD3 Mobo

While playing Eve Online I copied a chunk of text, about a second after copying it, the screen froze and a BSOD flashed up for a few seconds, enough to see the words "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" (google says this means nearly nothing without the STOP code).

I tried rebooting and was given another different Bluescreen: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and it mentioned the file CI.dll. It then rebooted nice and quick before I could get any more information.

Safe mode gave the same bluescreen, so I booted from my Windows 7 DVD and attempted to use the startup repair tool, which told me it repaired the file table (or something to that effect). This worked the first time, allowing me to get back into W7 and run an AV scan, watch some youtube videos and launch Eve again.

After about 20 minutes of Eve, the first bluescreen reappeared and this one caused even more issues. Booting was the same as before; CI.dll is broken. Booting from the Windows DVD worked until i attempted to use a repair tool, then it displayed another BSOD, but i got the error code from it:

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

STOP 0X0000003B (0X00000000C0000005, 0XFFFFF8O00C082071, 0XFFFFF88008897240, 0X00000000000000)

After a few more attempts using the Windows DVD I managed to make it run the startup repair tool; it fixed the following issue by doing a system restore:

"Unknown Bugcheck: Bugcheck 50 - Parameters = 0xfffff14014581bf0, 0x1, 0xfffff88000c5b531, 0x7"

This allowed me to boot, but then I bluescreened at the login screen with the same CI.dll error. All subsequent BSODs have been at the Windows loading screen.

Currently I am apparently able to run various tools from the Windows DVD, so I have done a Memory Test which looked clear, and am currently running chkdsk on the boot drive.

So, with this long post behind me I am wondering if any of you have experienced a similar problem, or can offer help. I have googled around for help with the STOP code but cant find anything directly related. I also found that CI.dll is the dll that checks the integrity of windows files, which may suggest this was caused by a virus of some sort.

Thanks for reading.

Bump.

I've done a reformat, but the bluescreens have persisted. The windows files apparently copy to the hard drive fine, but when the windows loading screen appears a bluescreen follows shortly after, often referring to CI.dll, sometimes saying "PAGEFAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA." I know this points to some kind of hardware issue, but I cannot identify whats causing it.

The first time it bluescreened after the reformat I tried resetting the CMOS. This let it get to the windows setup screen, but the bluescreen had corrupted some files and I was back to reinstalling from DVD, which then bluescreened when booting from the HDD. ugh.

For some reason, i can install and run ubuntu quite happily on the same hard drive with no issues, and 3d games like Eve run fine. The only difference being that ubuntu is running from a 100gb partition at the end of the hard drive.

Have you got the latest drivers for everything, specifically network / graphics / sound?

Are there any files in c:\Windows\Minidump created around the times of the crashes you could post/email to me?

The windows installation has been completely formatted a few times, so any minidumps are probably gone; checking the filesystem in ubuntu shows there is no minidump folder.

The sound and graphics drivers were not up to date as I remember, but they were not completely outdated; I think I had catalyst 10.12 and realtek's 2.52 audio driver. Network drivers I had never really updated; I use a rather old wireless network pci card (Belkin F5D7000) and found working drivers on Atheros' website (I think).

Hmm, you see if Ubuntu works fine it suggests to me it's a hardware/driver issue: I had a lot of issues with old drivers from Realtek (both my audio and network) which was why I suggested those.

Have you tested your memory with Memtest86+ or the one from the Windows 7 CD just in case?

I will try out memtest86 overnight (it runs until I tell it to stop if i remember correctly?).

At the moment I'm trying to eliminate various pieces of hardware, though the only thing I think I've successfully eliminated is the wifi PCI card (took it out, booted, same bluescreen). I attempted a similar thing with the hard drives, disconnecting all of them except the boot drive. This let me get past the windows 7 splash screen, but I bluescreened shortly after that with the same message.

I managed to brick my only spare pci-e card by manhandling it too much, apparently, so I'm stuck with my original 4850 until I can find another cheap testing card. The CPU I am not sure about; its had an intermittent noisy fan problem in the past, but has never (as far as i'm aware) overheated or given any trouble. The motherboard is what I fear may be the root cause, after the CMOS reset victory (kind of), but since I dont have a spare one(yet) to test out stuff on I cant confirm.

Bump, ran memtest86 for 8 hours, no errors.

I'm pretty much resigned to replacing the mobo at this point, so I'm thinking of getting an asus M4A78LT-M LE mobo to use as either a replacement or a test bed; it's got an onboard graphics chip so I can save on the graphics card.

More bump.

Installed the replacement mobo and got a bluescreen earlier than usual during the windows install process. It was a "pagefault in non-paged area" error, with the STOP code 0x00000050. Googling this tells me either my video card or RAM is causing the error.

I took out the video card and used the mobo's onboard graphics, but the error persisted. I guess the 8 hours of memtest missed something?

Sounds troublesome.

Yes, Memtest86 doesn't stop until you tell it to stop. Since your error occurred while installing, it definitely seems like RAM to me.

Try it once more I suppose for 12+ hours (excessive? I don't know -- it's how much I run it for!) It doesn't seem like it's the video card... I've never seen a pagefault error with a gpu problem...

Have you tried installing it onto another hard drive? Or zeroing the hard drive completely first?

I zeroed the boot drive and removed all other drives. The windows 7 DVD bluescreened with a STOP 0x3B code (system service exception), and google suggests this can also be caused by the RAM, so I guess I'm in the market for cheap ddr3 RAM now :(

As an aside, windows XP has installed and runs fine on the same drive, so I've got most of my programs back, though I'd rather be back on Win7.
