Bluescreens since new CPU!

A while back I replaced my old A64 3200+ with a X2 4200+ and ever since I've been getting bluescreens. Not often, but since installing the new CPU I've had more than the entire time the 3200+ was in place.

On the various Bluescreens the only files of note are these three, and it's a random order as to which comes up after each crash.

Srescan.sys
Portcls.sys
Win32k.sys

I've installed the Microsoft XP dual-core fix and the AMD dual-core drivers.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Oh yeah, also since installing this new CPU I can't use the XP defragger as it just freezes, the screen goes grey and it stops responding.

Try going into your bios and try setting your command rate to 2T if you haven't done so already. Run memtest and Orthos to ensure things are stable after that. If you are still having problems, you may need to reinstall windows.

Not sure if this is the case but sometimes you have to update the bios to a newer version for the board to recognise the dual core properly.

I had a similar problem but not exactly the same. I was getting blue screens randomly and but not very often and it was driving me insane. I tried new processor, new ram, even new hard drives but no luck. eventually i found out that it had something to do with my Nvida Nforce drivers and their firewall.

have you checked to see if the chips is getting enought volts? Have you checked the ram with m-test?

All components check out fine. As for the newer BIOS I can't access the ASUS site for some reason, and when I do manage to snag the updated BIOS it times out. I'll give it a few more tries though.

yeah new processor usually means a reformat!

Can't do a reformat though. I have shedloads of stuff on the drive that I don't want to lose and that are too big to back-up to DVD.

I've had a similar experience with an Asus Skt 939 Nforce 4 board and switching from A64 to an X2. Had random freezes (mostly just in windows not in games) and weird episodes where the screen would go black when playing games (esp SupCom).

I've had some luck with setting power management to 'always on' (even though I had Cool'N'Quiet turned off in the bios, so I don't understand why it had an effect). Since changing that setting my system has gone from 90% stable to 99% I reckon. It does mean no Cool'N'Quiet though which is a shame. I also tried much of the above advice - changing the ram to 2T, reinstalling XP Pro, more volts to the CPU, reinstalling the CPU driver, MS dual core hotfix and Dual Core Optimizer, none of which had any effect.

I think in your case something could be up with your OS though since my system would still defrag fine. There are ways of reinstalling windows without wiping your drive - basically extracting any files you need from the windows, program files and my documents and settings folders, then booting from a startup CD which can read NTFS discs (like pebuilder), deleting those system folders and any others, then reinstalling windows and telling it not to make any changes to the current file system. It's a pain though.

Partition your hard drive, mate... :)

It's not easy to say what the problem may be. Firstly, I would go with a reformat. If that doesn't make any difference, I would probably suspect the PSU. What PSU have you got?
Also remember since the memory controller is built into the cpu, the memory could might become unstable at same settings. Run memtest.
Are the temps nice? Is the Vcore correctly adjusted in bios? Try to update to newest bios, but be careful as you don't want to get a blue screen while updating the bios.

Get a second hard drive for back up, they are cheap as chips now.

I would also reccomend a fresh install of windows to see ifg that cures it.

Who says he needs a reformat? Reinstalling WIndows on top of his current installation (or even doing a repair install) will work fine without touching his files!

Guess it's about time I popped into OcUK towers again to get a nice new 2nd HDD then. At the moment I have my drive partitioned into four partitions.

C:\ Local Disk (Os is on here)
D:\ Games
E:\ General Storage/Downloads
F:\ Music & Video.

Guess I'll try a repair install first. Cheers manveruppd, I never bloody thought of that. I must be getting old as I did that exact thing to a mates PC not a month back.

where'd you hear that gem? :)

*thinks*

I was going to say after a I got a new CPU years ago, but I've just remembered now it was the MB that got changed. Good god I shouldn't post while I'm drunk :(

I think I told somebody else yesterday to look out for the Samsung *.10 series :( (Seagate..).

When you say dual-core drivers does that include the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer?

Perhaps you could uninstall the motherboard chipset drivers and reinstall them but make sure not to install the nvidia IDE/storage drivers.
