A quick, well equiped, well balanced car no doubt but £26,500? :/

Clearly it is a lot of money (too much IMO), however:
- You can't buy a brand new 911 for that
- It does have rear seats unlike the S2000 and 350Z
- Residuals are never going to be known until you actually get to the point of sale
- Whilst TG prefered the R32, they did admit that the 130 was more fun
- It's a good 300kg lighter than a 3 series (before someone adds this point).
Strikes me that the 130 is a rather good solution if you want a relatively small, performance rwd car that can seat 4.
From another perspective, assuming you're buying a new car (and someone has to, or the rest of us will never get to buy a s/h motor), then what else meets the above criteria?

I'd go with the R32 idea, scooby or evo anyone, RX8?? 350z(not the roadster) and s2000 depends what you need from a car If i didnt say it above i meant to there is a lot better about for the money, and have you seen the back seats in a 1 seriesok if your 3ft 2 but otherwise not much use. Also they are ugly!
But I bet they are a great laugh and a good car, and it will hold it svalue well, just too expensive for what it is (and ugly imo). But thats BMW for you. Loads will buy it and love it, I for one wont.

In terms of back seats, the ones in the 1-series are tiny compared to the ones in the Golf. The Golf will comfortably seat 4 adults over long distances, the 1-Series won't.

But the Golf is a Golf, and £25k for a Golf is stupid. Mind you, £25k for a 1 Series isn't really that much better.

Can I have a 330i M-Sport instead please? :p

I would love to know how many of the people who've just slated the 1 series have actually driven one.
You're not wrong about how it looks, but it really is a damn fine drive.

Yes but what good is that if every time you step outside and see it on your drive, you find yourself wanting to gouge out your eyes with a rusty nail :P

I could apply the same logic to a lot of cars. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and I think that a whole host of cars are pig ugly, including imprezas, evos, 5 series E60 etc. Do you think I should add a similar comment to anyone who asks about an Impreza?

My boss has one, and seems to love it to pieces. His family is however, rather well off and big Bmw customers. Certainly not a car to be sniffed at - and not many people expect a 1 series to shift in such a manner so adds a suprise value.

Evo mag has also found it a strange drive.
Over in Wales for the eCOTY showdown, it scored super poor, bumping & bouncing all over the shop not offering any confidence for the pilot.
However, for the FastFleet round-up around Herefordshire it was a different story where it nailed the damp conditions rather well.

General census, good steering, fine brakes, great gearbox, acceptable ride but silly price & styling... "But the BMW drives so well that if you claim even slightly to like driving you'd need a pretty cold heart not to love this."
