My Brother is thinking about doing a motorbike test now , hes 26 and hes looking for a certain type of bike.

Hes recently been looking at the :

Ducati Monster

Can any other bikers hear recommend any other bikes like this ?

They're two pretty different bikes. The BMW doesn't get very good reviews so out of the pair I'd have the Ducati. I assume he is after a torquey twin naked bike and something a bit different? He should take a look at the Aprilia Tuono 1000R and maybe something like the Buell XB9S / XB12S or even a Triumph Street Triple.

I'm strongly considering taking a look at the BMW HP2 Megamoto. It may be a bit pricier than some of the more focused motards out there but god dammit just look at the thing!

EDIT: One thing to consider with the BMW is that if he drops it, the engine is going to be damaged pretty bad. Something worth considering for a novice rider. There are protection bars available which bolt onto the frame but they look gash.
 
I have had over 40 bikes in my life, and at a time when I had a Suzuki Bandit 1200 and the very first CCM Supermoto, I also had a Truimph Tiger and a BMW 1100GS - the trailie-type. It was the best bike by far - such a giggle, way too big to be fun, but boy, was it ever - also the cheapest bike to insure and maintain...!
I did more miles and had more fun on that bike than any other..

i agree with that, ridden a 1150GS and it was a great ride, lovely riding position and really did move... would miss a sports bike too much though, cant beat the crazy top end rush
 
Any of the BMW R series bikes are seriously good. I've had a bunch of BMWs in the past, and other kit. The bike I always miss is the R1150GS Adventure. I did more miles on that bike in one year than any other ive owned (about 25k in one year, and I only ride at the weekend really. My normal is about 5-7k.)

A rockster would be a great introduction to biking. Also forgot what these guys are saying about reviews, its just untrue, or crap from completely biased bike mags. I'd also recommend the F series bikes to him. Last thing, the cylinder heads which stick out on R series bikes also give you great protection for your feet and legs should you come off, and they also protect you from the elements.. Great bikes.

I'm not a BMW zealot, but ive had a load of bikes over the years and they just "click".
 
Damn I do love the look of the Tiger. I went and sat on one (OH MY GOD) and a Sprint the other day at a Triumph place. I need to try 'em both.

I assume by your recommending it you are enjoying it? :) Did you get luggage? Any good?

the only problem with them is the comsuption of oil that they use, got to make sure you check (was it bike mag i think use bike ran out of oil and seized?), 1 litre of oil every 1000's miles is ok in the hand book for them :eek:

Crowze in Moto Guzzi recommendation shocker ;) Not a huge fan of the Griso myself, but it may be more in line with what your bro is looking for.

Best bike I've ever owned, and I've owned some serious tackle over the years.
Can't fault it.
No luggage yet. Will get the Triumph panniers soon and a plate for my Krauser top box.
 
I used to have a Ducati Monster S4, it was a brilliant bike with great performance and bags of character. Bit uncomfortable at low speed, otherwise fantastic.

The weight was what worried me about it initially but comparing it to other bikes of it's size it's a feather. I'm used to driving lightweight singles which I can really throw about so I have been apprehensive to get a bigger bike but I'm slowly convincing myself I could have two bikes. ;)

Sorry if this sounds stupid but I have no experience with BMW flat twins. Does the engine have much of a gyroscopic effect in the turns due to the layout or have I got it completely wrong? Another consideration is comfort. My current DRZ400 is a ladymaker, i.e. it makes you feel like a lady "down there" after half an hour on it. I can't have two bikes like that.

I think I'll try to get a test drive.

Here's a quick summary of what to expect.

The Megamoto is a big bike - long and tall - but light as you know - just 179KG. If you are small you'll struggle with the seat height although you can adjust the forks and rear shock to reduce ride height a little. It suits me perfectly because I am not small.

You will not get on this bike and think it is comfortable. The seat is narrow and firm. However, it does not get less comfortable over time as wider, softer seats often do. Also because of its seat height the riding position is very comfortable with your legs not bent too much and a nice easy reach to the wide highish bars.

If you blip the throttle at standtill the bike physically moves to the right. Not sure if that's what you mean by thge gyro effect but it is a by-product of the engine configuration.

As soon as you pull away you are aware of 2 things - tons of grunt and the weight of the bike seeming to disappear completely. Into your first corner and it's just so flickable and easy to steer. The combination is very addictive but this is not a soft beginner's bike. It deserves respect and rider ability, but rewards it with sublime handling.

As you can tell I'm rather taken with the Megamoto :cool:
 
Im also a lover of Guzzi but there slow heavy and just kinda weird..And expensive . The have a certain charm/character but the engine feels like its full of treacle and that yer towing a big weight around with you .

Its already been mentioned but give the Tuono a serious look . There prices atm are shocking due to the credit crunch and seem to be cheaper than the jap bikes and tbh there just as relaible .

I asked at my local dealer about a trade in and offered me 3750-4000 for my 06 example which makes a second hand private buy a bit of a bargain !!

Also look at Ktm SM/superduke .

And just because i can some Tuono pimpage ;)
