BMW drivers

How, given the equivilent models from Mercedes and Audi's cost the same and a bottom of the range 3 Series will set you back £20,000? If you must use such wide of the mark phrases where does that place your Focus? Sub-poor-man?* This is about as daft as those ridiculous opinions that an Aston V8 Vantage is a poor mans Aston or that a Porsche Boxster - yours from a staggering 40 grand - is a poor mans Porsche.

*Devils advocate, you know I've nothing against the Focus.

Fox, like I said, I don't care about what people think or feel about what I drive.

Difference is im not trying to portray my car as something it isn't.

Sorry Fox it's a poor mans prestige and always will be it's widely available to the mainstream unlike an Aston or a Porshe.

Infact I see more 3 Series than I do Focus these days.

The prestige status of the BMW is long gone, if I wanted sporty prestige I'd be looking at exotica or a roller not a BMW. Comical.

I agree in part but before the 316 Compact was the 316 saloon - introduced in the 1970's, it had a wheezy engine, wasn't very fast, and had 4 wheels and a seat. How was it different?

I think the compact took BMW to a new low. IIRC they had black plastic bumpers and you had to pay extra to have them colour coded? Now that's just cheap! (this probably isn't applicable now but this was when they first came out, around N reg or something I think)

Exactly, prestige my ***

I want to live in a world where poor people can afford a £20k car (We will ignore used examples as you are talking about how BMW market products, which can only apply to new cars). I can't afford a £20k car!

That will be your area that, according to the SMMT, the Ford Focus outsold the BMW 3 Series in every year of production.

I think whats comical is the sort of stuff you come out with. If you wanted 'sporty prestige' you'd be looking at Exotica? Oh really? Thats so funny its laughable. Generally speaking if you want a 'sporty prestige car' you dont go out and buy a Ferrari, becuase you probably can't afford one anyway, even if you are looking at the higher end of the BMW range.

Do you often hear a 'wooosh' noise as you read things on the internet? :p

Always, I'm being completely not serious with anything I have written here. Nothing unusual then :p

Poor mans prestige? A base spec 116i maybe. There's not many poor men that I know who can afford to spend over £20,000 on a car.

Maybe I should cancel my Z4, after all it's only a poor mans car @ £32k. I can't have people thinking that, I have a reputation to maintain!

The E30 3 Series from the 1980's had black plastic bumpers on the lower models as well? I'm not disagreeing with you in principle but you seem to think this is something new - they've ALWAYS had very cheap models in the range.

Oh yea don't dent your e-rep Scuzi please.

The BMW is 'affordable' IE a poor mans prestige simple as. Only BMW drivers will try to wing thier way around this. It is no way 'proper' prestige it just isn't.

BMW is a prestige brand, it is termed as such by the motoring trade because it's a fact. Another fact is because of the world we live in, people can take equity from their house and 'invest' it into a car. If I drove around a housing estate 15 years ago it was full of Fords, Vauxhalls and other such 'mainstream' cars. I drive around today and the same houses often have £40K cars on their driveways because they can. The world has changed, levels of earnings and availability of credit has changed which means expensive things become more mainstream. It does not take the fact away that BMW, like Audi, Mercedes and maybe Lexus are prestige brands, and just because you can get one for £3K does not change the fact the brand is prestige.

Now I have a choice whose opinion I listen to.

On the one hand, we have housemaster, owner of cars which make me jealous and many years of life experience. On the other have Tom|nbk, owner of a 1.6 Ford Focus which he's considered on three occasions to swap for a 316i or 318i, who has been driving for 18 months.

I wonder which is likely to have more value?

A BMW is 'Affordable prestige'

I didn't say otherwise.

Back to patronising, suits you best. :)

I don't need experience to know this, I've been in countless BMW's, why you think I need experience to know that the BMW is not proper prestige is beyond me.

So if a poor man can afford to finance a £20,000 car what does that make someone struggling to make ends meet?

And people thought *I* was sheltered!

'Poor man' being used loosely and obviously not meaning some hobo on the street who you wouldn't trust with your last sandwich.

It's tongue in cheek.

In the space of 3 posts you've said BMW is 'poor mans prestige' then its 'affordable prestige' now it suddenly isnt 'proper prestige'?

Could you do us a favour and stick to one opinion? Makes it an awful lot easier. Thanks!

Could you also define the Ford Focus?
