BMW drivers

Poor man obviously not meaning some hobo on the street who you wouldn't trust with your last sandwich.

Your average chap renting his own place on 12-15k a year isn't a hobo in the street. He's a regular joe. He probably can't afford to finance a £20k car. Yet in your eyes, he's below poor.

Oh yea don't dent your e-rep Scuzi please.

The BMW is 'affordable' IE a poor mans prestige simple as. Only BMW drivers will try to wing thier way around this. It is no way 'proper' prestige it just isn't.

It is a prestige marque, just not so much as it used to be. Yes they are as common as muck but they are still somewhat of a prestige brand based on price, quality, brand history and the market segment it serves.
Only BMW drivers will try to wing their way around it in the same way that only owners of crap cars have a problem with BMW drivers.

Who gives a hoot how common a car is? I had an argument with my friend about my Focus. He criticised it for being "far too common" and tries to use this as a negative. As I told him, there's a reason its common; it's a decent car at a decent price, and to my mind, the fact that lot's of people own one can only be a good thing.

Surely the same can be said for BMWs. They make excellent vehicles, and now they are becoming more affordable, so more people are choosing them.

In the space of 3 posts you've said BMW is 'poor mans prestige' then its 'affordable prestige' now it suddenly isnt 'proper prestige'?

Could you do us a favour and stick to one opinion? Makes it an awful lot easier. Thanks!

Could you also define the Ford Focus?

They all mean the same thing and I still come to the same conclusion.

Ford Focus :

One of Ford's best ever selling car, common as muck in no way prestige.

And you know what?

I don't give a hoot, because I enjoy it.

Who gives a hoot how common a car is?

When I chose a car, I don't give a stuff:

a) How common it is
b) What the badge on the front is
c) What sort of image it has

Provided the car I chose is built the way I want to, looks the way I want it to, drives the way I want it to, offers the performance I want it to and puts the grin on my face I want it, I don't give a stuff if its made by Kia, VW, BMW, Ford or Rolls Royce. I had a Ford, I loved it, and I don't care how naff the Ford badge was.

Simiarily, i'd never be put off buying say a Subaru Impreza by the image if it was the car I really wanted. Becuase who honestly cars what people in traffic you've never met, never speak to and will never see again think about you becuase of your choice of car?

The reason why I ended up with a BMW and why my next car will almost certainly by a BMW is becuase their cars are the cars which closest fit my preferences. It's nothing to do with image - infact I wish people didnt think they are super awesomely prestige becuase then perhaps they'd be better value for money. Currently, a used BMW is pretty crap value - £10k gets you a 6-7 year old 330i...

All this "poor man" talk though I'd like to add that for a lot of people, including myself, simply running a car (any car) can be difficult. Running costs are a killer and account for a large slice of my salary. I'd love to be able to afford a decent BMW. It's not poor to me.

You'd be suprised how much of the general public still think even old BMW's and Audi's are posh expensive cars. Someone I was speaking to the other day made a comment such as 'He had a really posh car' - the car in question was a T plate A4 1.8.

Remember that the perceptions of car enthusiasts and the perceptions of the general public can often be wildly different.

And this differs from a BMW owner how? Because it is a poor mans prestige car the owner can't possibly own it because he enjoys it. The only reason anyone would buy a BMW is to extend their penis. Of course, it makes perfect sense.

Wow did I ever say people shouldn't buy it because of it's status?

I have been considering purchasing one myself. It's always going to be affordable prestige, OK maybe poor mans prestige was not the best use of wording as it clearly rived up some of the local BMW nutcases on here.

I couldn't give a hoot about it's status. Only thing that annoys me is the people who thing they're the best thing since sliced bread in one.

I wish I could afford a nearly new BMW - they are far from affordable.

Have you ever met anyone who has said they are the best thing ever becuase of their BMW, or are you just making assumptions?

At which point I hope you told them to 'get a clue'

Yes, becuase that would have been very polite and neccesary, wouldn't it. Perhaps I should have beaten them with a keyboard in the process. Some people are just not interested in cars - they dont need 'a clue'.

These people form the majority of people you will meet.

Edit: To clarify she was commenting on someone else having a posh car, she wasn't the owner.

The amount at which they depreciate from new, they are very affordable.

That gets on my **** as well. It was one of the few negatives of the BMW brand I encountered when deciding on a new car however I eventually caught myself on and scribbled it off the list when I realised how ludicrous it was and besides, I didn't give a crap what anyone thought.

Tarring all BMW drivers with the same brush and suggesting the only reason they choose it over a Ford or a Vauxhall is to extend their penis/reputation also gets on my **** and it's a pity that it seems to the the common consensus of the general public.
