Bmw e39 530d

A lot of people are also genuinely mechanically clueless so don't know when something is worn / broken until it actually falls off.

That's part of why you see so many utter sheds for sale. Someone wants a cheap BMW and just treats it like a white good

I don’t think your running costs are that representative of an average older BMW owner. Most people running these kind of cars will only fix serious issues, whereas I imagine you would fix every tiny little rattle or drip of oil as you’d want the car to be as good as it was when new.
Exactly why I'd say his old 530i has value to someone despite what he thinks! - Assuming (and I'm pretty sure I'm right about this) its a 2 owner immaculate full BMW service history example with ~200k on it, at its age the mileage is arguably average yet the cars condition is way above average.

Fox should post an update thread on it!

I've always thought the same. It's a bit like Robbie's M3: yes it's CAT D, but unless I was a collector, I'd buy it over virtually any other example on the market. The owner of a car and their attitude to care and maintenance is the most important thing.

Well after looking at the car and us discussing it over a brew he choose not to go for it. To be honest apart from the one bubble starting the car was fairly clean for a 16 year old car. But had a few issues that would have needed attention straight away.

A £1500 - £2k car in reality then (and at that money, I imagine your mate may well have pushed the button...)
Unfortunately, even shabby ones are commanding more these days - as this seller proves - as I alluded to earlier, I think Fox would be very surprised as to how much his would fetch to the right buyer.

Paul Garlick on Twitter bought an E39 and is loving it, won't shut the **** up about it actually so must be good.

Still the best 5 series I think...as in at the time.

Indeed. And Chris Pollitt has just bought an e59 530i SE for £1k!

Yeah it’s certainly more around that price mark, maybe if it had been a private sale it would be closer to that price. I think he would have brought it, if it had been.... that way he would have had the cash to sort out the issues straight away to.

Iv have never seen Fox’s but from the sounds of it, it’s a well looked after example. I must admit after looking that one, I realised how much I still like them, I found myself looking at 540i’s last night. They are on there way to be modern classsics so I would assume that why the prices are increasing. I have been surprised by the price of some them.....
