If you want a nice reliable, modern premium feeling estate around the 4k mark, then imo the Accord should be top of your list.
The Diesel is excellent, the exec comes with everything, touch screen nav,electric leather seats, remote tailgate, and ok its FWD, but it doesnt handle badly at all. I think its one of the bigger estates out there aswell.

Other than economy and perceived savings over a petrol, what reasons do people have for preferring a diesel over petrol version of a car?

If faced with a choice of a lowish spec petrol and diesel. I'd rather go for tge diesel. Yes you only get a narrow band of torque but it make for effortless (ie lazy) driving.

It rattled, it was unrefined, it rattled, it wasn't a 5 Series and it rattled. So I sold it and went back to the E39
Flywheel torque. It's awesome for bragging down the pub to people who dont understand what torque actually is.
It also seems to be a bit of a made up scenario.
Which car does 4000rpm @ 70mph in petrol form yet the equivilent diesel does 2000rpm @ 70mph?
And we are talking about a Honda Accord, which doesnt have a 'small petrol' engine.

Im exaggerating a touch yes, but point still stands, there are times when a diseasal as hateful as it is, is a better bet than the equivalent asthmatic petrol. 320d is better than a 318i. As is the Accord CDTI vs the 2.0 ivtec.
Anyway, apologies for digressing, but Vita, is looking for MPG aswell, where a diesel, in the Accord anyway, will be much better. But yes for his mileage diesel isnt required.

The 2.0 (or 2.4) iVTEC engines are quiet and refined. There is simply no need to go for a diesel Accord for his mileage. The petrol Honda engines are excellent and more importantly are nice and quiet around town, too. The early Accord iCTDI's are frought with issues anyway and not even particularly economical.
It's not as if the choice is a nice big 3 litre diesel OR a 1.1 litre Saxo, is it?
good work, trusty 530 I'd rather have the petrol in both instances. And the 2.0 iVTEC is a wonderful engine, regardless.
