BMW windscreen, how much !

I had to replace an old Astra windscreen a few years back, Autoglass gave ridiculous quotes like £350, ended up getting it done by a local guy for £80 (that was minus the tint strip at the top, that would've cost £95)

So probably best to just work your way through the yellow pages :p

Yes it's not covered, I think it's under a traders policy.

most trade policies should cover windscreen, unles its for business hours only and its damaged outside of work :) but you should know what your covered for, or atleast i thought that when people buy/use insurance they normally check what they are and are not covered for ?

Look it's not covered and he is going to have to pay for it.

Yes he is using his contacts to try and find one cheaper, maybe I should have known better than to ask here for some help and the inevitable ending up with a discussion on his insurance policy and what he should have done.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, has anyone got anything useful to add?

most people dont see the cost of replacing the glass on their cars as its cover by the....... you guessed it .... insurance! so the reason its come full circle to insurance is not because we saying prices have gone up and its time to buy a mondeo but because thats the normal channel that the majority people will go through to get it replaced

I think the answer to this question is no, nobody has experience of replacing the screen on a 2 year old BMW outside of insurance.

Those that have replaced screens outside of insurance probably have done so on something like a 2001 Astra.

Ring around the glass companies, explain your aren't covered and what would their best price be.

You've gotta be a little careful with aftermarket screens and the light/rain sensors for the auto lights/wipers, non-OE glass can make the systems behave a little weirdly.

I've just replaced my windscreen without using the insurance company.

Partly because the ins company insisted on using a third party windscreen company and partly because they couldn't guarantee it would be a genuine BMW screen.

I'd also heard of issues with third party screens and rain sensor issues.

I went the same route in the past for previous BMWs including my M3. It's a more costly route, but £375 for a genuine BMW screen (and fitted by them) didn't seem too bad.

Why would someone with a motor trade policy automatically have contacts who can do windscreens?

Yes, why would somebody in the motor trade have people they regularly use for trade stuff. Why indeed.

I'd imagine most car traders pull out the yellow pages each time something needs doing to an item of stock.

Or is it only MikeHiow who has somebody on his payroll for everything ;)
