BO11LUX

I'm in two minds about this

I fully agree that the DVLA should have the right to revoke a plate, as a deterrant to idiots who refuse to have their private plate displayed in a proper font / properly spaced so it can be revoked if they continue to offend.

This particular incident however, i don't agree with. The DVLA obviously didn't think it was offensive when they sold it, and the fact they now want to revoke it due to some unknown busy body (police officer or not) complaining and asking for it to be revoked doesn't sit will with me.

DVLA should have told the person who complained to mind their own business.

If you have a plate with dodgy font or spacing or anything that doesn't meet bsau 145d then you can be reported to the DVLA. Two reports and they can and often will withdraw the plate and issue another one of the relevant age (not a Q plate). The DVLA have absolute control over which car has which plate.

Although not common - it is possible for a Q plate to be issued.
I was reading a story over on the Pistonheads forums where some guy had been stopped by the police twice for mis-representing his plate.

His letter from DVLA came with a nice Q plate for his car.
No reason was ever given - I'll try and find the story, but it was a while back.

Not as bad as B10 WME (spaced differently), not sure how that one slipped through the net but I had to look twice when I saw it

Don't see the appeal myself. Call me a prude, but what's good about a reg plate that vaguely resembles a rude word. The first word that springs to mind on seeing it is not 'classy', more like 'knobber'.

Not necessarily, it'll all be an automated sale process, so unless you expect them to be able to think of every possible dodgy combination possible in advance then a few will slip through the net.

This one has been reported and so they've revoked it.

i saw a stat somewhere about how many plates are removed from sale and never put up for auction and it was quite large

they obviously have some sort of process. They have for example, removed BO 11 LOX as far as i can see.

Its not registered to anything and not for sale.

Not exactly a huge stretch of the imagination to remove BO11 LUX as well ?

On a slightly different tangent... I pulled up next to an Overfinch in Chesterfield yesterday morning. Might have been the guy in question.

As has been said, bloke doesn't have an argument. It's the DVLAs game and you have to play by their rules.

Yes and no. The DVLA is a public body and as such they should operate the rules that we want them to, for us to then play by. Unfortunately, the DVLA acts like the Gestapo.

I could have sworn that it could be a q plate at times, although that may have been something else :)

When you're thinking about just this one word, sure.

When you're attempting to pick every possible combination that could conceivably show a huge number of supposedly offensive words, some are going to get missed now and then.

Getting missed doesn't mean the DVLA approved of it though.

remember seeing a photo in a car mag years ago of a merc with the number plate PEN 1S.:D
