Boarding loft with too much insulation

I'm not going to widen the opening. Decided that was too much work and i'm not too confident about removing and replacing the lintel.

Just going to lower it down to the floor, so i can use the existing lintel.

I'd love to board out loft out as its quite big (10mx10m at a random guess) but it's far too manly a job for me to carry out :o. I wouldn't know where to start with doing something like that.

I picked up 24 Diall loft legs from B&Q and some boards this week. going to tackle it Friday afternoon!

I'm no D.I.Y wiz, but it looks pretty straight forward. I'll post some pics while I'm up there!

How long did it take you?

I spread it over a couple of weekends due to having other commitments, however I reckon that quarter of my loft could have been done in a day. Like I mentioned in my post, the biggest pain is moving all the insulation, once you've got that sorted and got at least a couple of boards fully fixed, the rest becomes easy.

Yes, I thought that might have been the case. Once you get a solid few broads down to work from I can imagine it being much easier to progress.

I'm planning on boarding it out whilst topping up my existing insulation. Not sure how much of the loft I'll board out yet. Half should suffice for now.

Keep meaning to mine as well. I'm going with the doubling up of the joists though turning my 47x75 into 47x150. Then putting 140mm PIR inbetween the joists. This way i add strength at the same time.

I used chipboards to board my loft up. Got them from wickes - heavy buggers they were to get up there!

It is pretty easy once you get a few of them down and understand to stagger them. Just be careful of the wires. What i did was actually DRAW on the boards and write notes so you can see what is underneath.

use it for storage stuff mainly for mini psd99 :) Wacked all old toys/baby stuff up there etc. Just wish i have enough dosh to make it into a bedroom + wc one day.

I've had an investigation and got the tape measure out. There is an old layer about 7cm deep which looks useless, covered by either a 10cm or 17cm topup layer. It differs across the loft.

All of the existing insulation is covered with crap as first thought. But most is not in too much of a bad way. I can reuse some and double up the insulation in the inaccessible areas of the loft space, close to the eaves creating 27cm+ deep.

The accessible area is about 465cm x 360cm giving me 16.74m2 to cover. It is partially boarded already, and where it is, it only has the 7cm of insulation.

So it comes out at about £90 from Wickes for a 10cm and a 17cm layer. then I'll need the loft legs and boards.

The loft legs from Wickes have a height of 175mm
The Diall ones from B&Q are listed as 270mm

If I go for the B&Q ones is should be good. The joists have a height of 7cm giving me a total of 340mm.

Well I've picked up some loft boards and insulation to get me started. I've also got a box of loft legs and I'm looking to pick up some cheaply from a local seller on ebay.
