Boring old git....

i'm beginning to think i should buy something dull. I dont really use the performance of my car very much anymore, and although it's a lovely place to sit, i do all that sitting at low-20s mpg. A part of my mind keeps thinking how useful a mondeo estate would be.

I feel so old just for thinking it and i'm only 29. anyone else experiencing this?

I think you've reached the point in your life where you need two cars - a boring one and a fun one.

Our family workhorse car is a MK3 Mondeo Ghia X.

My other cars are a Westfield, Scorpio Cosworth and Lexus LS400 ;-)

Don't do it!

I sold my Focus ST and bought a 1.8 petrol civic because i thought i didnt want the performance and running costs of a performance car anymore.

Worst mistake i have ever made and i am now looking for something fast again 6 months later :p

The wife mentioned this too, I'm starting to agree with her.

I've commuted into work with her in our Focus ST and its performance really is wasted, people in micro city cars slowing the outside lanes of dual carriageways, people sitting in the outside lanes because they are going right at the roundabout in 5 miles time, busy rush hour traffic and endless queues etc, etc.

Its really, really frustrating and makes you think why am I paying for the performance when a basic Mondeo will do.

However, I think what amigafan2003 suggests is the way forward, two cars :D

I just picked up a 320d... not a bad car, but worrying I'll be in the same boat in a few months... want to stick with it for the extra money it gives me toward track toys... argh

/want both :(

I'm finding I'm in a similar situation with my ST220. You can actually watch the average (not instant) mpg drop while sitting in traffic like a countdown.

I'm thinking a 2 car solution. ST220 for when I need the extra room/seating capacity e.g. weekends only probably and a small, light, 2-3 door car that's nippy/fun and returns > 40mpg for my daily commute through congested roads.

Take a look at Suzuki Swift - one of the (very few) FWD cars I would consider - well balanced to make it a fun and involving drive and not too slow thanks to power/weight yet good MPG.

Drove the 2012 model and really rather liked it... just the depreciation is horrific... so much so, there were a few Mercs that would have cost less on PCP  Great buy second hand though :)

I don't see how two cars will be any cheaper!!!??

It will be way more expensive!

Yes... but the fun car won't be wasted sitting on the motorway or in traffic.

Boring comfort for the road, rigid power rwd for the track :)

With the £3.5k->£5k/year I'm going to save by switching from RX8 -> 320d, that'll almost pay for a formula ford season!

Depends on the person... more expensive is worth it if it means more fun :D

Or if just bimbling, then don't need that second car = money saved.

29 here as well and my impreza has been sat in the garage for 4 months and isn't likely to come out again now I'm in a 1.4 polo just trundling to work and back I'm finding it hard to justify the expense of doing it in the Scoob. I do miss the fun but the cost trade off in my current financial position isn't a good idea.

Sitting in traffic is death for MPGzz whatever the car...just remember to scale the urban figure of your prospective mile cruncher accordingly!

Well with that sort of saving, and in your situation, it might be worth it.

If you're only buying a second, additional car because your existing one does 15mpg in traffic as opposed to 30mpg during say an average of 10k miles a year then it is madness.

True... the second car should definitely be something worth it!

"Just" a 330 + bimbler would be a bit pointless. Would take years and years to recoup the second car purchase.

i'm only going to have one car whatever happens. I'm just not that bothered about what it is any more. The 330ci is a lovely car, and being able to effortlessly overtake is nice, but is it worth the vast running costs? i'm not sure it is any more.
