Bombarded with mediocrity

There are more high quality games nowadays than ever before in history. Take any year before 2004, compare it to 2013 and you'll see what I mean.

Agreed, this is why I am bored of pc gaming...just too dumbed down and mediocre these days. I remember a time when we had many fantastic game releases each week. We are lucky if we get a half decent release every few months now.

And what magical time was this?

I've been a (relatively "hardcore") PC gamer for about 15 years and don't ever remember a time where "fantastic" games came out more than every couple of months.

There are certainly a lot more "poor" games released these days, than say 5-10 years ago, but I wouldn't say there are any fewer "good" ones

Im playing Jets Set Radio on PC now and its awesome. Sure graphics are dated a bit now but the gameplay is great. It was awesome when I had it on the Dreamcast as a kid and its awesome now.

PC gaming is better than ever. The problem is the PC gets multiplatform games most of the time. If PC were the lead platform there would be a noticeable change but as mainstream games cost well into 8 figure to develop we have to put up with multiplatform game designs which are glorified ports on PC most of the time. Most of our current games have forced co-op/multiplayer components which are a ghost town after launch as on PC no-one wants them on console they take whatever they can get so they last longer

If you look around there are still some decent experiences on PC:

I just bought Gauntlet in a Steam sale it looks pretty but has decent gameplay hard to put it down it plays like a simple old school game.

The Evil Within is a decent action survival horror game.

Shadow Warrior 2013 is a decent FPS. Hard Reset is another decent FPS.

Alan Wake, Fallout 3+New Vegas, Limbo, Alien Isolation, Wolfenstein 2014, Dark Souls 1 + 2 are all pretty decent on PC. The games are still there you need to look harder & support the games which appeal to you the most.

Even revisit older games with SSAA, DSR & or Ultra Widescreen. Silent Hill 3 (best game in the series IMO) supports ultra widescreen with mods as well as SSAA it looks dated but has a good atmosphere still.

You mention RE4HD. Are you aware the std RE4 release supports mods & has a lot of great community mods since 2007. It actually looks better than the HD version once fully modded as Capcom left out some shaderFX from the RE4HD release

This is what I'm saying in a nutshell. A great game is always a great game so why don't developers etc. use their millions on games that are inspired by great games not re-packaged tripe.

I just think game studios don't want to take risks anymore, so we end up with the same stuff time and time again.

Absolutely. This is true of the music industry right now as well. Sadly, it's hard to really blame developers. They invest ridiculous amounts of money and have to see a return or thousands of people lose jobs. If it weren't this way then we probably wouldn't have the AAA production values. Would we rather still be playing last-gen level titles with better gameplay and story? Probably.

It's all about money it seems to me. Look at how successful the FPS market is, even though the vast majority of FPS games are mediocre at best, they sell well.

Yep, mediocre FPS games are cheap thrills. Any FPS game with current-gen graphics will feature enough footage to make for an awesome trailer.

I wonder what percentage of buyers of a title like COD Advanced Warfare just see the TV ad and pick it up without so much as checking a single review.

R.E Resi 4 HD in OP:

I bought that as I loved it on the Wii. Couldn't reload my weapon on pc. Great. Once I'd used my pistol and shotgun clips up it was knife-only kills. Gave up..

Feels like this to me at the moment - barely feel any incentive to play anything - too many shallow contrived mechanics and lack of inspiration.

Was going through Dishonored, but kind of got a bit bored halfway through - despite solid gameplay mechanics, the game world just didn't grip me at all and I lost interest. Most likely going to play Alien Isolation next, when I feel sufficiently motivated to buy it. I'm waiting for the final release for Elite before diving in there - I think I can hold out for a month. :p

The only two games on the horizon I have any interest in are Star Citizen and Mass Effect "4", both probably two years away...

Everything else looks mediocre, unless there's some mindblowing gem released in between like Bioshock Infinite, or if Bethesda suddenly announce TES 6. I dunno - seems to be too much regurgitation of the same ideas again and again, while barely improving on them.

The quality of gameplay has gone downhill a lot over the last few years, and it is no secret that I blame a lot of it on Ubisoft and their forced-fail states. For a while, this started seeping in to other games as well, Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider for example, but luckily it looks like the tide is turning, as Ubi themselves have said that they are looking to do away with them.

how can such an old game(a classic fair enough) grab my attention so much, and how come it's turning out to be one of the best games I've played this year.

Old games aren't necessarily bad games, and anything less than 10 years old (as RE4 is) should still be perfectly playable if it was a good game to start with especially if it has had a HD facelift.

I've long since given up on expecting games released in a given year to necessarily the best game I'll play in that year, but this may be because I have a massive backlog and tend to play many old games (a few years ago I looked at my list of completed games since 2003 and at least 30% of them were over a year old when I played them).

Essentially good SP games don't become bad games overnight, they just get more dated and clunky (lacking modern refinements) as time goes on. It would be a sorry state of affairs if games aged so quickly that we had to play them the year they came out.

I'm sorry - I felt really bad posting that. :(

Don't get me wrong, I love the gameplay and combat. Just found the characters all... well... I didn't care for any of them. And tbh I didn't care for the world either.
The heart had more character than most of the NPCs! :p

I left off halfway through the mission to rescue Emily from the Golden Cat (?) - I have no idea why my interest slipped at that point.

Edit: Maybe because I was going for the pacifist/stealth/low chaos route - that can be a bit tough because of avoiding most of the fun that can be had with the powers and weapons.
Maybe if I come back to it in the future in a different mood I'll see it in a different light.

I think that you need to look at what it is about games that were truly great.

The two that spring to mind are Deus-Ex and Vampire The Masquarade. Both had great stories and mechanics that encourage exploration.

Modern games that give the same structured sandbox approach are things like the GTA series (Vice City is my fave so far).

Really looking forward to GTA-V on PC.

I'm currently replaying Morrowind and having an awesome time.

I enjoyed Oblivion to an extent but I just couldnt get into Skyrim. Rightly or wrongly i just dont get the same feeling of freedom as I do with Morrowind - and with the Overhaul mod pack the game looks stunning. I can find myself just running around exploring the world without a care in the world or a thought to the story/main quest. I cant remember the last time I did that with a recent game.

They've been mentioned earlier but Ubisoft really are my biggest gripe with the gaming industry right now. Every game they make is pretty much a reskin of the last one. They all seem to share the same overall design and features.
Take over a renegade camp/hack a tower/climb a tall spire to unveil a portion of the map to reveal missions/collectables blah blah... The only upcoming game of theirs which looks remotely interesting to me is The Division but quite frankly it wouldn't surprise me if that turned out to be the same uninspired tripe as the last few games they've made.

Ubisoft aside, its almost become a certainty (to me anyway) that every game I feel any sort of hype for turns out to be a let down.

Maybe its because we've seen everything before, or maybe we're just getting older and grumpier?

I'll go back to 2002 now where the world is full of happiness and joy. (and where Im 12 years younger :D:D:D)

I agree, there are not many games I've played recently which had me in waves of excitement. The only 3 I can say that have gave me that feeling are: Dark Souls (1), Don't Starve and Kerbal space programme.

I realise 2 are indie games, that's the point AAA is failing us.

The most dissapointing time I had was playing tomb raider, it was so linear and I just wanted it over with in the end. Far cry 3 was a little better... But not by much. Dishonoured was a bit better as well but nothing mind blowing..

Once you've finished Oblivion install the Nehrim total conversion. It's like Oblivion but better. A lot better. And in German.
