Bonkers world we live in.

The girls argument comes across as a bit weak

But what does a nearly 100 year old book teach modern kids? At some point a classic becomes more and more obsolete. It's just the nature of things.

Nonsense. It's a long time since I read it but what remains in memory is a sad story of two brothers.

If anything books like that help promote debate in the classroom.

Maybe the solution is to let individual kids pick their text from the approved list.

People still live their lives according to a book written by some bloke thousands of years ago, absolutely bonkers.

It's one thing to be told in history lessons about things that once happened, such as racism, segregation, Apartheid, The Final Solution and all that... But it's another to actually understand it and experience what it was like back then, even if it's only in a film or novel where experience comes from engagement with the characters.

This is why period films remain so popular, be they corset dramas or war films. For example, Band of Brothers is a stunning series, but the standout moment is the concentration camp scenes in the 'Why We Fight' episode, because it takes words off a textbook page and makes them more real to the viewer.

And dare I say it would be a good thing to actually show kids in history who are studying world war II.

I did English literature at GCSE and we had to read 'To kill a mockingbird' and 'Educating rita'

At some point the teacher showed us both movies though, and that's what made it come alive more for me.
