Booooooo Wow hack

Just wanted to pop onto my old WoW account, taken up other games at the mo (but have still kept the account active and weirdly applied for the Beta test of Cata) but was going to let my younger cousin have a blast.

Anyway was just logging into the account and got confronted with a request for a authenticator code. I have never set up an authenticator for my own account so I am assuming that I have been hacked.

How do I go about sorting this out? Rather vexed to say the least

Edit: Just to flesh this out a little I have never had anything like this happen before, I have never visited any of the dodgy gold buying sites and I have never been stupid enough to click on the pathetic scam link e-mails you get to hack into your account.

They sort it out over the phone pretty good and fast from what I hear but no idea what support is like over a weekend :/

Might have to do it via email/interwebs?

Just had a look at that and they want me to send an e-mail with a picture or scan of something like my driving licence to prove my ID.

Now not to doubt blizzard but if they cant guarantee the safety of an account when I am not even logging in and out of it I am not particularly keen on sending my personal ID's across the web to them

You must have clicked or downloaded something dodgy. They didn't pull your email address and password out of thin air lol.

Only thing even vaguely wow related that I have downloaded it raid add-ons but that was getting on 2-3 month ago now.

I know how dodgy the interwebs can be so I avoid anything other than main stream sites.

But shizzle can happen, lazy blizz doesnt seem to work weekends, doubt they will work bank holiday monday either so I will get on the phone Tuesday. Luckily I have rarely played during wrath so they wont have much to sell :p Im not even worthy of a hack!

ring them and all they'll ask for is basic stuff like the CD key and your name/address. They'll send a new password to your email.

Im doomed, god knows what my CD-key is havent even got my original CD copy I bought way back in vanilla. As I said I havent had any account problems so dont even know my secret question never mind the answer :p

Sure I can probably blag it as I know the account no of my card which is linked the account and other stuff like that

The exact same thing happened to me a few months ago - I'd not even logged into WoW/Bnet for months so only God knows how it was hacked - I only found out because Blizzard emailed me telling me my account had been suspended. You can fill in the webform in the support section of the Battlenet site. My issue was sorted within a couple of days - They returned any missing items from characters via in-game mail and gave me a days game time to retrieve everything.

Have you always kept your flash player up to date? Easy to get a keylogger from ad banners otherwise. Not fallen for any phishing e mails?

Perhaps it could be this, cant remember last time I updated flash. Will take that on board.

Nah none of the e-mail scams, these days if I dont know where an e-mail is from I just delete it regardless, dont even open the thing.

Anyways thanks for the help all, will get this sorted so my little cous can try the game next week. Much appreciated

When I got hacked it took them two weeks to sort out the login information and equipment/gold though were very helpful to get everything back to normal. I hope that the new expansion will include an authenticator for every account since I think it's mandatory these days with all the people trying to gain access to accounts.

Just to be a pedant, I doubt any of you were 'hacked' as such. :P

Did you use the same password for your WoW account as any other websites? Especially forums, since its possible for less than reputable forum owners to store passwords as plaintext, and thus have both your email and password, which is all you need for a WoW account.

And run the full antispyware/virus suite as well.

My friend's account got compromised as well a couple of weeks back. Found out about it and emailed blizzard on the saturday it happened, had his account back on sunday, and the items that had been taken/sold back by monday. Fantastic work by Blizzard.
But the best way to keep your WoW account secure is to get an authenticator. Yes, there is news of a 'hack' that means people can get into your account even if you have one, but that's essentially a combination of keylogger and virus. The keylogger gets the authenticator code as you enter it in, and the virus prevents you from actually logging in, allowing them to login using your valid authenticator code.

This is hapenning a lot since the battlenet merge, as people use the same email address for their new battlenet account as they do for wow related sites. Who know's how many people also use the same password :/

The password I used for my WoW account was different to every other account password I had at the time. Also, I had up-to-date Windows update, anti-virus, firewall and router firewall.

My bet is the addon - they id'd a number of rogue addons with keyloggers attached a little while back. Just have the authenticator removed and put your own on. Don't worry about the hack, they only have something like 60 seconds to enter the number and provided you don't load anything dodgy onto your comp it's 99.9 percent secure. When it all happened to me, took me 4 days to get everything sorted.

Oh dear me someone squeeze my testicles and slap me in the face!

To make this even worse on the off chance I dropped our lovely and friendly local Blizz worker ColiN a trust e-mail a while back about getting onto the alpha/beta testing of Cata and I have got an e-mail inviting me to that but my account has been hacked :p

Now if that isnt bad luck I dont know what bloody is lol

edit: I think anyway, the e-mail looks a little shifty to be honest :)
