I've just purchased an external USB for backing up my media. Before formatting the drive to a single 1tb NTFS partition I'm interested to know if it is possible to boot from the device?

Are any of the following possible?

  • Partition the external drive with one large data partition and a second "active boot" partition, place an ISO file in this partition and boot the computer off it?
  • Partition the external drive with one large data partition and a second "active boot" partition, use UNETBOOTIN (as used for making a USB flash drive bootable with an ISO image) with the desired iso file to then enable booting from the USB?

I've never come across partitoning an external drive does this still work at all?
