Boot into linux

I'm not sure whether this is a boot/motherboard problem or a linux problem but I thought it seemed more approriate here.

I am trying to boot into Backtrack 3, have tried from CD and USB (http://dotnetwizard.net/vista-stuff/tips-how-to-bootinstall-windows-7vista-from-usb-flashhard-drive/) and I just can't get it to work.

Setting CD as priority boot device and using a CD I burnt the image onto, I get the error: "Fatal error occured - BT3 data not found."

Then it gives me the workaround of putting the folders in the iso into my root directory (which I have done for both my partitions) but this does not work.

"Something went wrong and we can't continue. This should never happen." Then it tells me to reboot

Trying to boot from USB, I think I might have done the mobo settings wrong because it just tells me to put a valid boot device in, and I copied those instructions very carefully.

Anyone have any experience booting from USB or CD on a P5Q? What settings do I need? Or if you can figure out the CD problem that would be great too. Also I'm currently dual-booting Windows 7 RC and Windows XP Pro with specs in sig.

Thanks for any help, I'm new to linux (trying to learn) so be gentle :)

First off Slax based distros are not the easiest for newbies.
Have you tried burning the ISO at a slower speed, have you checked the CD against the checksum.
I cannot help you with any advice about your mobo as I have AMD gear.

I know it's been a while since I posted in this thread but I thought I would revive it rather than starting a new one.

I have re-burned the image at a slower speed with ImgBurn using the verify option to check it did it properly but still getting the same problem.

It's saying I may be using an incompatible boot device such as SCSI or PCMCIA (I think those are right, or almost). I am using a CD in this as my boot device. Should this be ok?

Any ideas? Would love to get this working and have a play around.

Ah, when I try to boot into Austrumi it says Austrumi not found, then:

sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

No idea what this means, does this help though?

EDIT: replaced post because I was plain wrong

If you're doing it via USB, download UnetBootin and put the iso on your usb stick that way. Also, check in the bios that you can read from usb sticks at boot (in mine it is called legacy usb detect).

More google searching turned up this which allowed me to boot into BT3 but not Austrumi, though I'm not so worried about that for now. The first change on that page causes XP to **** itself on boot and give me BSOD though so not sure what's going on there.

Anyway thanks for the replies.

Use OpenSuSE, I love it & it is one of the easier ones. Is this in grub?

title Windows

rootnoverify (hd0,0) (what ever drive it is on the first 0 is drive 1 the second is partition 1)

chainloader +1
makeactive

boot

Gotta agree. Although I'm a big fan of BackTrack.... I've been using it since it was Whoppix... but it's a bit of a strange choice for a beginner's distro.

It's a bit more "rough around the edges" than some of the other distros, such as Ubuntu, SuSE, Fedora, Mandriva, etc... which have put a lot of work into making it as user-friendly as possible.

Sure, BackTrack can be made to work... after all, it's just yet another distro, but you may find that other distros just work without you having to jump through any hoops.
