Hi guys, issue with my brothers PC.

He was using it for about 2 hours today, went way for about 30 mins, came back and the system had hung. He re-booted and now the PC won't (at least it seems) boot from the HDD and it seems it isn't detecting it. the message on the screen is along the lines of "verifying DMI pool data...Boot from CD".

PC specs:

Athlon 3000+
Gigabyte k8Nf-9 mobo
1 Gb OCUK value RAM
Seagate Baracuda (SATA)
CD RW + FDD
Tagan PSU
X800 XT

I have re-seated the hard drive and checked the cables, everything seems to be powering up fine and POST isn't giving any errors.
Seeing as nothing has been altered im assuming HDD failure (the system has always run fairly hot), but any help to confirm or deny this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It does look like it can't load / or locate the windows files..

Do you have a startup disk?

If so, get yourself one with CHKDSK on..

then run ..CHKDSK /r

This will repair any system files..

The error maybe caused by corrupt files or a dodgy HDD sector..

havn't tried wither yet (eating tea ;) ) but just wondering (as ive never dealt with this particular situation befoe) is the XP disk also the boot disk i can run this lot from, or will I have to create a bootable floppy?

ok forget my above post. I am i nthe recovery console at the moment and have run check disk. it has repeated the line "CHKDSK is performing additional scanning or recovery..." about 11 times, each time with a % counter before it prints the line. Now it seems to have frozen on the 11th "line". Any idea if its smegged or if its found a bad sector or somethign and I need to re-boot?

Ok, in this case, run the CHKDSK /f first.. as it looks like there is a bad sector.. this command will mark the sector(s) as bad and they won't be used.

Then run the CHKDSK /r to repair.. this should sort this out..

ok this is peaons brother here, he is at work, anyway, how do i get the PC to run CHKDSK /f when i boot it? do i need to do something to get it to dos to do that?

(Please forgive me i am a novice at PC repair) :)

pea0ns brother here again

i have been speaking to someone and they said "what use is a chkdsk if the drive isnt even being registered/found"? i am totally confused, anyone help would be most greatly appreciated!!

See say here if you want to run CHKDSK from the recovery console.

Where are you at with this?
Can you see the hard disc in the BIOS?

ok just looked, and i am going to say no 'cos i can not see anything with my HDD's name on it. all i can see is "boot from HDD, boot from floppy, boot from CD" etc
thats all.

Is this the motherboard?
(GA-K8NF-9 (Rev 1.x))

The manuals at the site...get it.
here...motherboard_manual_k8nf-9_e.pdf

When the power is turned on, pushing the <Del> button during the BIOS POST (Power-On Self Test) will
take you to the CMOS SETUP screen. You can enter the BIOS setup screen by pressing "Ctrl + F1".

Do I take it your brother knows more than you?
If so, I'd be inclined to let him do it.

ok so on further playing, i put in my windows CD

i get to the screen to try and get into the recovery console or what ever its called. repair console?

and it wont load it due to there being no HDD's present. i unplugged my USB HDD which i got about 3 days ago, so that means that the internal hdd is fried?

oh yeah, my brother does know a lot more than me lol, i am a novice, but he is at work untill later today, so i thought i would try and get it working.

I got into the cmos setup screen, pressing ctrl+f1 did nothing. but i guess that the hdd has had it.

You haven't had enough time since I posted you the link to the manual.
Leave it to your brother!

yes i tried this, however i got a message telling me to make sure my HDD is powered and connected, which it is connected and so should be powered.

also i have the manual in paper form, it came with the mobo.

I looked at your brothers? post above that says...

Seems the recovery console etc worked for him and he could see the hard disc.

Maybe the disc has died since then or your not doing it right.

i got home last night as he was doing this

once it had finished and it pasted the results, it pasted something along the lines of 460gb free on the HD

now that cant be my boot HD as it is only an 80gb one. it must have scanned my USB HDD which as i said just now, i have unplugged.
