**Borderlands Pre Sequel** SHIFT keys in first post!

Just beaten this, thoughts below:

+More of the same is OK when the series has a pretty good formula
+Some decent characters, the Aussies in particular
+Really good range of weapons
+Writing generally good although maybe slightly down on BL2 for humour
+Indoor missions generally pretty good
+OK game length although you have to factor in that probably around 30% of playtime is spent looting / sorting loot etc
+Gives some decent back-story for Jack, who is clearly the most interesting/best character the franchise has to offer

-Very slow start; after the first couple of hours I found myself wondering why I was bothering with the average level design, average graphics, repetitive boring loot chores. The first level looks and feels like a budget game from the mid-noughties, not a modern flagship title. Then once you hit the wastelands one finds they are very lacking in charm and the game doesn't really pick up until you go into the more industrial zones. I rarely felt this way in the earlier games, they seemed to start a lot stronger.
-Too many places where you can fall to your death. Up to around chapter 6 or so I think over 80% of my deaths were caused by this. This is compounded by some areas where it looks like you should be able to drop down and explore (example being in Concordia, a drop far shorter than I had made on other maps and had a stable floor not a bottomless pit of oblivion)
-Doesn't seem to offer much over BL/BL2 other than air combat which is fun for a while but the novelty wears off
-Seems to be a bug on the Lab 19 optional mission; I've completed it but there is no marker on the map showing where Nakayama is located. Had to quit and restart for it to appear.
-Levelling pace seems a bit off; for the majority of the game most missions are normal, easy or trivial but all of a sudden when I got to about L22/23 and was facing the guardians it seemed to ramp up rapidly such that I was battling enemies a couple of levels above me. To be fair this may be because I bypassed more side missions later in the game, so I can't be too critical here. The general impression I get is that you 'need' to tackle more side missions than in previous games.

Overall it felt like a decent game but maybe a bit of a franchise cash in. It's more like a glorified expansion pack and I can't imagine I'll play it again (although I do think the varied character trees and NewGame+ mode are to be commended). Take away the slightly addictive loot metagame and you are left with a fairly tired formula.

It's just not BL2. It's good but not excellent.
Unfortunately, one of the main guys from Borderlands 2 (creative director) has gone, so my hope for a decent Borderlands 3 (which they have said they've not started on) has kinda died.

One higher level guy leaving is unlikely to destroy the franchise man.

I'm more hyped about Borderlands 3 than most upcoming games, really. Who knows when it'll happen, though. Shame they've had to work on Battleborn instead, which is going up against the Blizzard juggernaught with Overwatch(and will be releasing like right at the same time basically). So yea, not a ton of hope for that one(and those games aren't my style anyways).
