I finally pick this up, but im stuck now, im only level 11/12 and have gotten through sledges hideout, but the big dude with nades just ownes me, was i a bit early in going there ? and can i leave and come back later, as theres no way i can kill him.

Sledge is 1000 times easier when you got a gun that's effective against shields and then one with chance to ignite. Take down shield, ignite, kite, rinse and repeat no worries

I'm really thinking of buying one or two of the DLC as I enjoy it and I don't know if I can be bothered to play trough the same again to get to 50 but I have no idea how much xp the DLCs would give me!

Yes, you perhaps need to abandon that quest for now and do a few side quests until you level up.
i though that might be the case as it was driving me mad, even the bruisers were tough, can i exit or do i have to walk all the way back past the respawned enemy ?

I beat Sledge, wasnt to bad tbh, the bit i was stuck on though was in sledges hide out 
after escaping, i leveled up to 18 then went back, and it was much easyer, slowly getting into this more now, to the point where im thinking just one more mission

just to add input to borderlands i think after buying the game and all the dlc (just got claptrap tonight) that the only real longterm dlc is the general knoxx. the others are more gimmicky, zombie island and claptrap would probably be about the same time wise to complete (i know theres glitches or problems with claptrap but if there wasnt..) and mad moxxi is pretty crap because you cant level up or up your weapon proficiency at all during the 20 rounds of 5 waves per round... its a drag.
I'm looking forward to the update which will allow an extra 9 levels and re-jig the drops from enemies as well. Bit too late though as i've gone through borderlands so little point in runnning through the same missions again at level 61 with better weapons. Shame.
It has been a good game just gearbox are doing it back to front with the update being the LAST thing after all the DLC...

just started playing this through again with 2 friends. great fun, got myself some awesome weapons! got up to the part where you gotta collect all those bottles of booze for that guy. addictive is not the word
would you believe though... out of the millios of weapons the large RAKK could have dropped, he dropped a tri-shot rocket launcher which i already have, absolutely IDENTICAL. i was gutted.
