Boris Becker jailed for two and a half years following bankruptcy scam

How do you give an individual a financial punishment when they have no money?

Pretty sure as well that it was more the fact that he lied after already being given a warning that pushed it to a jail term
Also if you make it a purely financial penalty for perjury (for those that can afford it then you're basically telling everyone that if you've got the money you can just lie to the court without any risk to your liberty.
That's a very slippery slope for any legal system to go down.

Lying to a court is always taken seriously as it's seen as a crime against the legal system/something that can undermine the legal system if it's not stamped down on.

Don't be so hasty guys, he's the type of guy who has the balls to challenge the officials decision; just because they think he's at fault doesn't mean to say he won't return to court and end up being let off. The ace up his sleeve could be the fact that presumably he still has enough money stashed away somewhere to lob a backhander to the judge; failing that he's got experience crying in the box so a sob story about needing a roof over his head might do the trick. If he does go down, a former athlete such as him is probably strong enough to break out of jail by smashing through the wall and running for the hill. The 5-0 ain't got no chance when they're facing the 6-0 baby!

He could do community work.

He could have a tag on his ankle with a curfew.

In my view prison shouldn't be for generally non-violent criminals. In this case he's not a threat to the public.

Tend to agree. Prison costs huge amounts of money and should only be used for the most extreme crimes. Most other things should be community service and things that actually contribute to the society they have been deemed to have damaged.

If millionaires knows that the worst punishment they will get is picking up trash or serving soup at the shelter…it’s not exactly a deterrent.

Lots of rich people get caught not paying taxes but usually they just pay it back, get a fine and perhaps at worst a suspended sentence. Becker took it too far so he got what he deserved. Which should be more than community service.

If lying to a court to steal £2.5m isn't extreme then what is? While they aren't a danger to the public there needs to be some kind of deterrent other than a slap on the wrist.

They should get a massive fine, have to pay the full amount of tax back and do a huge amount of community service and perhaps be put on a curfew. Hes not dangerous and all that putting him in prison does it cost the tax payer huge amounts of money. The rich get away with a huge amount of stuff because the fines are paltry and they can pay them. The rich wouldn't be so quick to do it if they got a massive fine and had to do a thousand hours of community service. Thats basically 20 hours a week for a year.

Taking away someones liberties and freedoms can be done without prison. Prison generally isn't a great deterrent. Most people are far more motivated if they lose things like money, freedom and time.

I disagree, I think financial crimes would be much more prevalent if you took that deterrent away.

Most people are far more motivated if they lose things like money, freedom and time.
So the poor go to prison and the rich buy their way out? Did he even have any money to pay a fine if he owed £3m?
