Bought an old BMW M3, filled with regret...

Currently route planning a road trip around the Swiss Alps for around July, got Furka and Grossglockner pass on the cards. NC500 was brilliant as it was, but Euro just has to be done. A mate will also be joining me in his XFR. I'll be recording the trip in 360 VR, so that should add an interesting dynamic to the viewing experience on the 'Tube :D Nobody else seems to have done that kind of video yet for these.

Can't think of a better way to navigate mountain passes like those than with roof down combined with that induction noise!

I'd love do something like this, especially with the induction noise as you say :-) - funds will not allow unfortunately :-(

My dream holiday would be route 66, in some sort of mad V8!!!

Edit*

I don't normally do this, but needs must when you find yourself in the wrong lane and know the gap is widened easily. And nobody was inconvenienced, so all was well... induction noise also ;)

I am considering upgrading the Eventuri filter part to their newest design which has a higher/smoother airflow profile:

Old:

New:

https://www.evolveautomotive.com/blog/new-release-eventuri-new-design-replacement-filter.html

Their dyno chart shows a 3BHP increase over the previous Eventuri filter design, not that any power/torque gains matter, but the introductory price at £31.20 seems a bit of a no brainer really for the airflow gains alone.

I think I know what needs to be done now...

Think I will join you on this, filter is 2 years old now so this seems like a great time to not only replace it but also get a newer design.

You ordered yours mrk ?

Yup should be here Monday or Tuesday.

I'll stick the old one for sale up on one of the Facebook groups, someone will have it for £25 I imagine.

Thought this might be the right place to ask, but anyone know the best way I can read and clear codes on the M3? It there a recommended app and obd reader?

Car had been stood for a week, and during a run out my check engine light lit up! D: Absolutely no symptoms apart from the light which is still present, but I am reluctant to drive it again until I've investigated further.

I did some reading around and it suggested its likely to be related to emissions?

Could be emissions yeah, before I replaced my MAF, my post cat O2 sensors were flagging error codes and had the same EML on the dash.

Replaced the MAF and reset the codes and nothing since. Simply resetting the codes brought the same ones back a few drives later.

You can use Carly for BMW app and a compatible obd cable. You will likely see other associated errors if it is also the same thing as mine, like "Minimum flow of secondary air" which is all related. Of the MAF is failing, then your O2 sensors won't be reading coreectly in turn.

So, as always, one issue leads onto another! xD

Basically, I can get the bluetooth OBD adapter to communicate with the app but for some reason it won't communicate with the ECU.

I've tried multiple apps, and 2 different bluetooth adapters, and even confirmed that they all work by connecting to another car.

I think my car's OBD port is broken! How could that even happen? Never heard of anything like it!

First things first I'll have a look at the wiring and give it a wiggle, I'm not sure where I can go from here without handing it over..

What adapter do you have? Carly and apps like it for BMW are specific for certain adapters. ELM327 is the type that works if your adapter is Bluetooh. You could try the other mode settings in Carly?

I think they're both identical to the below. Work a treat on our other car, but not a sausage with the M3..

I'm looking in Carly and I'm not sure which settings you mean. It keeps trying to sell me their official adapter, I assumed that its just a standard one like I have but in nicer casing. Am I wrong?

Is that a genuine ELM 327 dongle? There are clones about that work on most cars, but some ECUs don't play ball with some apps/software you see.

In Carly settings you have options for communications type and adapter test, checked those?

Haha the brides hair! Great fun :)

Fyi, I think you might be onto something about the fake dongles. Any advice on a reasonably priced quality one? Don't fancy taking my chances on ebay again.

Interestingly, I tried to take it out today and was greeted by a flat battery, when charged the check engine light was gone! (I still suspect its stored and needs investigating).

I took it out for a good old hoon and part way in the cars started doing a strange thing with the traction control.. At around 6.5k rpm in any gear the traction control light starts flashing and cutting power. Even when grip is ample and going in a straight line..

So it looks like at best I've swapped one issue for another..

Right at the wrong moment too as I'm in the middle of renovating a house.. Serves me right for not driving it much over winter..

Now the weather's booking up I can't wait to be out in it and enjoying it properly again though!

If only the DSC light is flashing at those revs then possibly DSC pressure sensor(s) on the blink. They're £90 each and there are two of them. Best get that fault code read again to see if either sensor has flagged up.

How old is your battery? If it's the original or unknown, I'd replace the battery as your cells are likely degraded by now.

As for dongles, I gave my genuine one away to a member here as I use the cabled version instead and it was kicking around doing nothing!

I'll try finding the eBay link to it and post here in a bit :cool'

That was easy, I keep everything in emails it seems lol. From June 2012:

I know what you mean! Recent times with poor weather have meant i have not taken the car out for a drive with no destination on some evenings during the week like I used to. It's sometimes gone a full week just sat there waiting. A sad sight as I walk home from work and approach the driveway.

But, days like the above where it gets used, and the experience shared with others, just great
