Bought some expired medication from Tescos

Does powder go out of date?

I work as a warehouse manager for a large pharmaceutical company, and yes all these products have a strict use by date, even powders. We despose of a lot of drugs every day that are out of date.

You should have just returned them and complained.

The reality is that it would have made no difference whatsoever.

Broadly speaking with regards to pills and sealed powders, they can last years past their "use by" date.

The only thing that NORMALLY happens is that their effectiveness can be slightly compromised.

I can't speak for the 0.5% or whatever of the specialist stuff that falls outwith of my statement.

Ive taken antibiotics that were supposed to be used by 2007, and that was recently. Worked a charm as you would expect.

Throwing perfectly usable drugs away is a scandal. Not only do they pollute the environment, its a total waste.

As for the OP, its flaming LEMSIP, lol, its not chemotherapy ffs!!

Its going to make no difference whatsoever!

As a counterpart I once took expired drugs. I was horrendously ill afterwards, far far worse than before.

Also not the drug I'd taken before, had taken it previously.

Tesco usually don't bat an eyelid if you return out if date products.
Also, a regular OTC medicine will likely be fine well past the date.

I used to work for a major beer company, and retailers insist lager has x months of shelf life, however, I can verify that lager Is good for a fair few months after its date. The same ford for most consumables.

A lot of warehouses sell out/short date stock off to staff very cheap, theres nothing wrong with it.

Was this particular medication for PMT? ;)

+1! And whether it was the liquid or powder version, you may have been fine, or even more man flu'd than before.

& I would have just went back, demanded a new pack which was actually useable, and gave the manager some thoughts ;)

We are talking a matter of weeks, not months or years
Just take it and move on. Next time check if it bothers you.

Sounds like you are just looking for [scum]'the compensation you deserve'[/scum]

My two cents is to just write to their head office customer services if you're that concerned with it. To be honest whilst there is an expiration date on the product, as mentioned, products on shelves have VERY conservative estimates on their life span. Products are fine for months past their best before dates. Most products are still absolutely fine past their use by dates (within reason).

I also work in a retail chain, errors occur. If I have any products returned like this and someone complains that they're ill from it it'll get referred to the manufacturer who will advise us on whether that person did actually get ill from the product and the life span of the product. You're not likely to get much from me either. However if you come in, you're a little understanding that mistakes happen, you're much more likely to get a gesture of goodwill regarding the product.

So in essence, be nice. Yes it's an inconvenience but, at the same time, the product is probably absolutely fine and expiry dates are more there to aid stock rotation in shops.

Damn threads like this really make me worry about society.

Man up OP, you BOUGHT some expired 'medication' (paracetamol).... About as effective as it was in date.

Why are you wanting to start world war 3 over some lemsip? Just write to customer services, explain the situation and you'll probably get a £20 voucher for your trouble.

You wouldn't have died. Grow up.

I'm after some advice on whom the best person would be to make a formal complaint.

Just a brief background on what happened. I've had the nastiest man flu this week. Last evening as a last resort, I went to a large 24/7 Tesco to pick me up some medication. I bought Lemsip Max as there was no night nurse available.

After arriving home and kicking back, I checked how often the dosage should be. I noticed the EXP date was: 07/2011.

It was then that I felt like taking my keyboard and to beat everyone up in Tescos. I'm not a happy chappy. And I'm not feeling great either.

I find it alarming that this kind of stuff is happening in such a large chain. And more importantly, it's my well being here. If I do die, someone here can have dibs on my 32GB touchpad.

Has anyone got a direct email I can forward my complaint to and any words of advice/wisdom?

Thank you fellow keyboard bashers.

oh no your snake oil is out of date go back to the customer service counter and have it replaced/refunded.
