Bow Hunters

After watching Myth Busters, i saw that hunting with bow n arrow is legal atleast in America, ive always had a love for bows, although never owning id like to get into this is it legal in the UK? and anyone have any opinions.

I thought bows were perfectly legal in the UK, but crossbows had more restrictions. Not sure if things have changed since I heard that though (years ago)

*edit* crossbows are fine unless the law has changed since this and several UK based stores seem to sell huge bows so it should be fine!

Obviously standard things will apply like not taking it in public..etc and i think you can't use them to hunt animals as it may come under the hunting ban

The Countryside and Wildlife Act of 1981 makes it illegal to hunt any wild animal in the UK with a bow.

Owning a bow is fine. I still have the compound bow I have had for years.

I used to use a Robin Hood bow and arrow set with those suckers on the end of the arrows to hunt in my back garden as a kid. Mostly big cat but there was the odd pigeon

this country really does suck in some ways. Especially when it comes to hunting.
Any idea what the reasoning for it was? or can I guess at silly animal rights.

different opinions of what is savage. So was it savage to take it down with a bow and arrow. Or just letting it die naturally once it was down. I would only call the latter as anything resembling savage.

It's funny how things are only savage on large mammals and when not in a survival situation.

Been looking at the Hoyt range? some very nice bows made by them back when I was shooting 2 years back.

I've got a Merlin Max 3000 compound bow sitting waiting to be used again

You don't naturally die from an arrow shot at you. You naturally die from cancer. It was left to bleed to death by a retard. Impossible to kill a big animal straight off with an arrow. Even swans don't die when chavs shoot at them point blank range with a bow.

There's nothing natural about poking a big hole in something and then waiting for it to slowly bleed to death, whilst suffering pain and fear for the duration...

The point of ethical hunting is a quick, clean kill. This was clearly not ethical, it's practically poaching.

I agree that it's natural to be killed by something higher in the food chain, but when we have the means to provide a swift death with minimal suffering, and the knowledge to know what suffering is, this behaviour is just unnecessary and cruel.

Archery itself is really easy to get in to in the UK. There are plenty of local clubs and beginners courses can be relatively cheap and normally require no equipment (club supplies it). Most of the archery in the UK is Target Archery but you can get some doing field archery which is as close to hunting as you can get in the UK.

Bow Hunting is barbaric and cruel. To qualify that, I go hunting with rifles and enjoy it very much - one of the core principles of any hunter should be getting a quick clean kill (a headshot). When you hit something with an arrow, it suffers a great deal of pain and dies a very slow death - an unnecessarily slow death. Shooting arrows at painted targets is the only thing that bows should be used for.

I find it sad really that for so many people a by product of their "fun" involves something having to die, I feel hypocritical though with this thought as I used to hold a shotgun licence and I am ashamed to say went hunting and killed things, If there was one part of my life I could change it would be this
