From what I understand, the majority who died had made their way to the rear of the stand to access emergency exits, only to find that they had been locked.

A lot of them seemed to be elderly as well if you look at some of the ages on the memorial (over age 70), probably had trouble escaping by climbing over the seating/barriers etc.
