We've recently lost the kneeding paddle from my girlfriend's bread machine. The machine is very old (10+ years I reckon) so replacing it is going to be difficult and it's about time for a new one anyway.

I've been looking at reviews etc. and it's difficult to decide what's best. The most popular at the moment seems to be the Panasonic SD255, but there are a couple of tihngs that turn me off.

SD255 Pros:
- Fruit and nut dispencer
- Can make different sized loaves (up-to XL)
- Highly thought of (presumably makes nice bread)

SD255 Cons:
- Price. I'll spend £94 if I have to, but something cheaper would be nice.
- Size. Looks very big, and our kitchen is full of stuff already. And the size isn't any benefit, with only two of us we don't need to make giant loaves.

I know there must be loads of Overclockers here who like their freshly baked bread. Any recommendations?

We use to have a Bread making machine just a cheap one. The smell and the taste of fresh bread just baked, is one of the thing's you can't beat.

Yum, Yum, Yum. :)

i will watch this thread with interest as im looking in to getting one too. I used to love making bread from scratch when i was younger but its to much hassle. And im interested to see how bread from the machines turns out.

Would love to be able to make rolls instead of bread with a machine. Is this possible?

I can highly recommend the Panasonic SD255. I've made 25 loaves in mine so far.

It's not really that big. I keep mine on top of a mini-freezer and there's still plenty of space around it.

Try drawing the footprint dimensions on a piece of paper.

The footprint isn't the problem actually it's the hieght. Our current maker lives on top of the (full-sized) fridge and it's short enough that the gf can reachup to use it. I think the SD255 might be too tall for that, which means I'd be called on to move it down every time

Yeah, you use the bread machine for mixing and proving then make rolls and bake them in the oven.

I found bread machine stuff to be pretty rank compared to real fresh bread to be honest.
Thanks, that's really helpful.

why not just get a kneeder. Then you can make so much more. well i suppose you can take the dough out of a bread maker and stick it in the oven.

We got a Panny SD254 as a christmas present. Never had a "soggy/doughy" loaf from it and it gets used all the time.
Wish we had gone for the 255 with the fruit dispenser with hindsight, then we could have let it make fruit loaves over night.

Baked bread doesn't last that long though does it?

Is there any preservatives that you could add that would extend its life?

It lasts a couple of days before it's all gone :) I use olive oil instead of butter and it seems to stay moist a bit longer.

I have the Panasonic 254.
