Breakdancing proposed as a sport for the Olympics

Maybe it's just a bit of snobbery based on the origins of breakdancing?

I've always enjoyed watching it tbh, and would enjoy it more than other Olympic events, like dressage

It's like how "A Question of Sport " has been infested by athletics. There doesn't appear to be any standards anymore. Sport is sport, athletics is athletics, dancing is dancing. The Olympics has long since been diluted by nonsense events though.

I haven't in a while, but I used to breakdance through college and uni, and as with most forms of dancing, is highly subjective to the viewer. Because of this and wanting to make the competitions more objective, years ago they introduced a new system for judging, to much controversy. However, there are 5 judges, each giving their vote on who performed best based on certain criteria; Foundation, Originality, Dynamics, Execution and Battle. (You can read more here: http://ourbboys.com/?page_id=2). I'm not sure now how implemented the system is, or whether most people/events still base it on opinion but I'd imagine if it were to debut in the Olympics, it would follow something similar.

Personally, I always thought that the style of breakdance, isn't really 'fitting' with the whole Olympics scene, but I wouldn't oppose it. It would be quite good to get a bit more exposure.

Given that Break dancing was originally a very serious business as an alternative for conflict resolution over actual combat.

It probabally actually meets the original Olympic criteria (IE Battle Skills)

From the Urban Dictionary...

Dance-off

As noted in the movie "you got served" people will dance-off to settle differences. instead of pulling out you nine and bustin a cap, you could easily dance off...the winner gets rights over the losers property. this property includes but is not limited to b******, hoes, dog's and or children. it is not uncommon to be b**** slapped after the dance off.

:p

Should have been added a long time ago, especially when bboys were in their prime. This will bring the scene back to mainstream :col:

Breakdancing requires exceptional core strength, agility and muscle group control. A professional breakdancer may well be more athletic all round than a normal athlete that specialises in only isolated areas.

This is what I was going to say but also synchronised swimming is an event, isn't that just dancing in the water?

Exactly, there are already BS sports in there.

Not sure why darts and snooker were used as a comparison earlier though, they’re assessed rather objectively. No one cares about form, style, how neat you look etc... in those sports but just what score you get.

What ever happened to Chess, I remember many years back there was a campaign for Chess to be included at the Olympics. I'm sure I even remember them trialling it at the Sydney Olympics or something.

Ballroom dancing was an event in the early modern olympics.....and was rightly dropped because it isn't a sport. The only reason dressage is still included is because it gives the posh people something to participate in that doesn't involve exercise. If they think that breakdancing should be included, I would suggest they replace that dance with capoeira.
