Breakdown cover

I've used Greenflag, RAC and Autonational rescue and out of the 3 Autonational rescue were not only miles cheaper but gave me a much better service.
They sent out a proper bike recovery company rather than some donkey in a van who knows he can't fix bikes and isn't carrying a trailer but computer says they need to come out before they'll send anyone actually capable of working with a bike.

GreenFlag left me on the side of a little country road for 4 hours the day before new years, by the time they'd got round to picking me up both me and the bike were ice covered and if I hadn't by pure luck had a hoodie in my bag I'd have been in an even more **** state.

I have the full hit with the AA for 2 cars/People. Cost £38 is per month.

Car broke down last week got AA man got it mobile again so followed me to the nearest garage as it was only a temp fix. Hire car sorted for 3 days whilst investigated. Garage cant fix for 8 weeks due to parts being on back order and costing £2400+vat So the AA then relayed the car 200 miles back home to my local garage.

Spurious part found online ordered and the AA are paying £500 (less £35 excess) towards the repair. All in all over £1200 saved but the piece of mind is worth much much more.

Got a years cover with my used BMW and I'm not sure who that is with, however my girlfriend is with AA (and I was with them prior), and they have always* been excellent.

*On the two occasions I've needed them in the last three years or so.

I also have the Nationwide bank account cover. Used it a few times for various things and can't complain at all.

Different local recovery companies do the actual work and took me to a garage of my choice (I chose different ones in each case - depending on what the recovery was for) - they were quite flexible and actually 'local garage' seems to be a pretty loose term - one of them was about 20 miles away.

Does anyone know whether you have to 'use' the FlexPlus account, ie regularly pay money into it (aside from the monthly fee) in order to reap the benefits?

Only requirement is you keep up the monthly fee.

Aside from breakdown cover it gives great travel insurance, no fee cash abroad etc. and other stuff too.

As for the "local only" thing, wording might be that but they don't stick to it. The reason for it is due to the company calling out a local firm to wherever you are, they don't do patrols like the AA etc.
I've called them out before and it was much quicker than AA or RAC have ever been even though it was a very busy day in the centre of a city. The truck that turned up could have towed a lorry and my mk2 Golf was dwarfed by it. :D Also, the driver asked where I was going / what would need to happen if he couldn't fix it, I said I'd need to get it back to Bristol (I was in Exeter) and he seemed to think for a bit but was fine with that...as it happened it was fixed at the roadside anyway.

E:
Apart from they only take you a local garage. AA will take you to a location of your choice for more cost of course.

I've never had to pay any extra when I've been recovered to my choice of destination with AA or RAC. I've had cars on flat beds taken 10-100 miles and others taken on the a-frame 0-10 miles all for free.

Nationwide is a no brainer IMO, if you've got a half decent mobile then insurance for that is nearly a tenner a month. Annual worldwide travel insurance could be about the same. It's nearly 3 for the price of 1!

There was never any impression I'd be paying extra to get my car recovered from Exeter to Bristol when I stated that's where it'd need to go if it couldn't be fixed there and then.

Yep, I needed a car taken from Glencoe to Edinburgh as it was still under warranty. Nationwide bank advised local garage was the best they could do, if I wanted it taken somewhere else the charge was £2 per mile, return. So 220 miles return £440.

I have used RAC for the last few years due to their excellent multicar family cover, we have 5 vehicles on full recovery and at home for £180 pa. I think the longest wait has been just 40mins.......my son's car breaksdown a lot!

Hmm this is disappointing to hear. I have yet had need to use my cover with nationwide but the policy states that they should be relaying you anywhere you wish should they not fix locally.

Does anyone else have actual experience with claiming under the nationwide breakdown cover?

I have Flux Rescue with Adrian Flux. £55 on top of the policy. Used it the other day, indie guy came out at short notice and did the work required to get me going again. Didn't cost me a penny extra, would definitely recommend!

I didn't actually need my car transporting in the end, but Nationwide were going to flatbed my car to the next town, around 12 miles, and take it to their depot overnight then take it to my nominated garage the next morning because the garage had already closed.

Hmm, that is really bad :(
