Breakdown cover

Over the years I've found it cheaper to just not join but phone them as and when you need them. I think last time was about £150 for a call out, unless you're breaking down every year it makes no sense to me.

With the state of the roads these days it's not even just breaking down it's trashing a tire on a pothole and of course most cars these days no longer come with a spare in which case the can of goo isn't going to put the tire back together.

I normally have my service done at at a local Ford garage, but more expensive but It’s convenient for me being just up the road, and always been happy with the service they provide.
I will have to see what’s what when I go for me next one soon and work out the price in my head with the free AA breakdown cover, which is the full works breakdown cover I believe with home start/ European cover e.g. It’s only offered on certain certain Ford services.

....if it's free cover, what price are you calculating?

Is it like my local city pizza where buy one get one free costs more than the price of just one pizza :D

If you go abroad it's nice to have the option of getting recovered back home without paying thousands of pounds...

I think a Ford service is about £300, so yeah it’s not completely free when you factor in the increased pricing but I think full works AA cover is well over £100 so I guess you can say it’s “partially” free

I may just go for thier cheaper essentials service which doesn’t include breakdown cover and sort that out after.

Never ever drive abroad. If I did, I'd actually imagine some/all travel insurance either covers that or can be added on.
Just got to go with what suits you individual requirements. In all the years I have been driving I've needed help only twice.

I understand your point. However, these days, with mobile internet and instant translation on the phone, you can arrange a recovery provider and garage if necessary. The UK breakdown services are not necessarily quicker. The recovery home option is expensive so you have to check it is included explicitly in your deal.

Using mobile internet works if you only occasionally drive outside your home area. When you do, you can jot down the numbers of a few recovery providers at points along your journey, in case you have no mobile signal. I'm not saying it's ideal, but it may be cheaper long-term. The advantage of recovery services is they may offer a roadside fix, but they won't be doing that where you are stopped in a dangerous position on a busy road.

I guess having breakdown cover does give you better peace of mind though.

I'll take out abroad cover if I need it tactically, I'd like to find a which gives me Euro cover too for not a lot of money. policy though , if that can be done for less than £50 p/a

otherwise, having payed them ~£20 pa for UK forever, which I've never used, offsets risk of being in middle of nowhere and (will it really only be) £150 fee

is you car still in warranty though ? so don't they have some obligations of roadside help anyway.
Father had had similar with toyota, but now out of warranty is paying £100+ pa, via toyota, which is probably giving eu cover he wouldn't want

With RAC for the past couple of years.
£30, which incudes home start, onward journey etc.
£40 call out fee if I ever did need to use it, which touch wood I've not needed to.

Nope its out of warranty now.

FYI - My Dad gets full European breakdown cover included with his Nationwide account.

I think thats the flex + which is £18 a month, thats pretty good if you make use of the holiday cover and mobile phone insurance, for me I wouldn't so it would work out a lot.
