Surely someone would've cried mayday?

Just have to hope more people are okay. The only reason I can conclude IF this is evidence is that it might have been a spontanious thing, no time to call for help. Perhaps an explosing on board - only a lucky few got away?

You scared the crap out of me! My parents are on Arcadia atm and when I saw your thread, I bricked it!!

Glad they are ok, but feel for the people involved in this one!!

idiots, this problem was known about with those ships and little walls were built to stop the water sloshing from one side to the other.
its the typical ferry nightmare though, sinking in the middle of the night, in the dark, thats why im kinda scared of ferries.

Apparantly the thing had been heavily modified (a ton more decks built on the top) which made the thing look top heavy, not sure if it actually did, but it looks strange. Pics are in a thread on SA.

Well its obviously too early to say but the fact there was no SOS means it went down fast, with Ro-Ro ferries this usually means one thing, a failure of the bow door followed by a capsize.

HEADRAT

Reports are saying there could have been a fire on board.

I bet the ship was a joke, i bet the company overlooked the need for repairs to the ship just so they can make that extra profit.

Lets hope this will make every ferry in Egypt safe, wont do the tourist trade in Egypt anygood.

Some guy on sky said that the last ship that sank in 1991 sank when it hit a reef and it went down in 20 Mins.

it looks more like a ferry than a cruise ship..used mainly by locals..not tourists

tou would hve to count yourself unlucky to go on your pilgrimage to mecca then on your way home find your ship is sinking..would seem like a bit of a kick in the teeth if you were religiously inclined

I expect safety standards were not as stringent as they are here and its bound to have been overloaded so far too many people and probably not even enough life vests let alone life boats

we have all seen how quick these things go turtle...most people below decks wouldnt have had a chance..the poor buggers

All ferries are now required to have an indicator light on the bridge signalling that the bow / stern door is closed, locked and an interlock put in place. That way, it should be impossible for the ferry to sail with the watertight doors still open. That said, there are a lot of cowboy operations out there.

The bulkheads are only placed in the engine room to stop free surface effect in case of water entering. The main car decks themselves should have scuppers (drains) to allow water to drain freely.

Very sad, especially after all the new regulations have been put in place to stop this type of thing happening. Doubtless the owners will get off scott free.
