Breaking up concrete

Using a sledge hammer that close to glass I'd probably lay something over the concrete to stop chips flying off, as well as a board over the glass. Dust sheet maybe?

I have been knocking concrete out this morning and started with 4kg SDS breaker - after 5 min swopped to the 15kg Titan breaker - the weight and that slow thump soon cracks it up.

was going to flog it but glad I kept it.

Ignore my previous post. The **** at screwfix customer service lied and they do sell they £100 model in store!

I only saw that today after taking his word and buying the Titan one.

Quick update: Very impressed with the £99 screwfix breaker, took less than 3 hours to smash up the slab that was nearly 5 inches thick in places. All windows intact at the end of it, probably the hardest job was shifting all the rubble to the front of the house for disposal. Annoyingly due to the extension I have to take it all through the house, which is through the dinning room, then the kitchen, then the utility room then outside. Had to be done in trugs as I can't easily get a wheelbarrow through my house!

Ear defenders, goggles and dust mask are all essentials too. Safety boots would have been nice, but I left them at work!

Dave

Good stuff, i think i'm going to return my Titan one and try and swap for the one you have. Then spend the £50 saved on the Titan SDS drill which will come in handy in the future.

Got 2-3 one bigger one and other 2 like this size here:

Sadly their right next to next door neighbors fence so can't do the carjack or dig around unearthing trick.

Would a reciprocating saw do the trick ? I like them but figured there good for normal wood/plastic, tree stumps are a different kettle wouldn't the blade
just break or wear out ?

you mean the kick back ?

Tried a bow saw its very hard work and not really making a dent much.

I was looking on youtube at this beast here:
bosch professional GSA 1100, its 99 quid on amazon and is a heavy duty reciprocating saw

Cuts thru solid timber like butter in that vid, metal and bricks too. I think with the right saw part it could do a stump with a bit of work, maybe to cut into
smaller chunks or triangle cuts or angled cuts maybe.

I may give it a go, just trying to save some money I just know ill get quoted £500 for one stump

Tree stumps i have always found the most effective way is to use a large sharp flat/Forstner wood bit, you can get pretty big ones. Just drill the hell out of it and then smash it up with a pick axe.

Cheers for all the ideas, yeah I think the drilling idea is best I have an ancient corded drill but those forstner drill bits, see you can get large 60mm ones cost
14 quid for a set off rainforest.

I may try that and just drill like a maniac till it crumbles and breaks away.

Yep that’s what I’ve always done, just drill massive 60mm holes everywhere until there is hardly anything left and then smash it up with a pick axe or whatever.

Remember to Get a bit with a long shaft

Or hole in middle and light a sack of coals going. Will burn the stump all the way down and leave just ash.

Plus can cook some marshmallow.

Never even thought about that ! could easily slip in some coals and get a mini fire going.

Can't risk it sadly since my stumps next to next door neighbor's wooden fence but could do that on another stump.

Vids on you tube of this being the approach and it does work.

two approaches. For stumps at ground level you want a drum to cover the size of the stump and fill it full of charcoal. (start as normal and add to a decent depth)
For higher stumps, eg cut off 6" above ground then drill a hole into the middle, and some holes from the sides that will join the middle as you need to draw air really. Then feed something that will burn down the hole, petrol or something is probably easier to start unless you have a very fat drill bit. Once its going you can feed any wood, charcoal etc into the hole in the middle, it will burn out and down.

do you guys reckon an SDS drill would be best with those forstner drill bits for the tree stump ?

I have a crappy old drill from eons ago, doubt it has much power to it.
