Worried that her daughters' budding breasts would expose them to the risk of sexual harassment and even rape, their mother Philomene Moungang started 'ironing' the girls' bosoms with a heated stone.

This is one of the more weird practises I have learnt about whilst surfing the WWW

That's pretty screwed up.

I would guess if a guy is going to rape someone he ain't gonna check if she has any breasts first.

thats ******* evil, sometimes I realy wonder what people are thinking!
although the whole being raped thing that goes on there so much is a big issue too.

Comes under the same category as female circumcision.
Not quite - This particular abhorrent act has, supposedly, altruistic intent (in that it prevents rape).

It's amazing what feudalism and a lack of education will allow you to believe.

As an African, im glad this things are getting exposed to the world, that will help minimise and eventually eradicate things like this. There are so many practices/cultural practices in africa that even me as an African dont agree with.
If i should list some practice i know and have withnessed first hand, people will thinkim lying. it is all good this is coming out.

For such a prolific thread starter, it's displays a surprising degree of reticence, that you haven't made a thread on them already.

That's appauling. I can't imagine how they think its beneficial!?!

:(

What im about to say is not in anyway in support of what we are discussing here but to let you see things frim an African point of view.

Rape cases is rampant in that part of africa and one of the biggest discusssion on that issue is that the rapist are usually attract by the female poited nipples, iirc places in Uganda tried to encourage the young females to wear bra by importing plenty from china at one time but the idea didnt catch on as a result of people being to poor to afford to buy a bra (sad but true).

I see why they do it but i think it is even more dangerous than getting rapped instead, imagine the pain you have to endure every morning.

Fair enough :)

Regarding this post, however, isn't the claim that rapists are motivated by the appearance of their victims pandering to the apologist view that the victim is in some way culpable?

Rape is a crime of power, not sex, after all. It's because (and here I'm making generalisations) of a prevailing male chauvinist attitude in Africa that acts such as breast ironing exist - Mothers believe that they can protect their daughters by removing temptation, in an entirely misguided way.

Does anyone really believe that a rapist, if faced with a girl with less that pencils for nipples, will in any way reconsider his course of action?

Sit back for one second and try to understand what im saying here.

My pregnant gf is from cameroon and we discussed this thing several times in the past. Mothers do it from an early age so as to (in their view) suppress the growth of the breast, so it dosent appear pointy - you know the ones you see underneath the vest when it is cold here. They believe by doing so, they greatly reduce the chance of their daughters getting raped in the long run.

Do you catch my drift?
