Basically everything is going wrong with my dads computer again :( and though the answer to this question won't likely help me fix the problem its still something that'd be useful to know.

If i have two HDDS in a mirrored RAID and i switch the two around on the motherboard (ie switch the sata cables form the drives) would the RAID utility be any the wiser? Would it detect the change? If drive 1 was bust and 2 ok would this fix the problem (my guess is not)?

Thanks in advance,

You should be able to swap the drives round but it won't solve the problem. If one drive is dead then it's dead and should be replaced (and checked offline if you want), this is the sole purpose of RAID1 - you can pull the duffer and keep working.

Avoid doing this! If it is one of the channels on the controller that's busted, the data on one of the drives will have dropped out of sync with the other drive, so if you swap them you'll be causing the same problem on your good drive!

You'd be better off trying the suspect drive in another PC, and running a non-destructive test util just to see if works (you can get these from most HDD manufacturer's websites). But remember don't format or partition it, otherwise you'll lose the data on that drive!
