(referred to in this Act as a " distiller's licence ")."

But there it also says (forgive me if im wrong) that making your own wine is duty chargeable? But for your own consumption it is not surely? And surely that can be applied to anything home made?

EDIT - righto, didnt see that part, ignore the majority of this post!

How boring.

The problem with distilation is that methanol (poison) and ethanol are difficult to seperate as their boiling point is similar. Too much heat in the process can convert ethanol to methanol. This is why it is illegal !!!!

If you distil incorrectly you get a proportion of methanol in the final liquid. Drinking it makes you blind and gives you organ failure .... hence the saying blind drunk.

Methylated Sprits... the purple stuff is actually 95% drinking alchohol and 5% methanol with a tiny bit of colour. Drinking even a small amount can kill or make you very ill.

nope. its Illegal to distill spirits without a license because the govt. makes embarrasing amounts of dosh by charging for licenses.

you're right on all the other stuff though.

Methanol = very bad.

Methanol is not produced in distillation and can be broken down to harmless products via oxidation.

The reason it is illegal, has already been said, money.

Stick to making hooch - fruit juice, sugar and a spoon of marmite. Probably make you ill as well as drunk, but not fatally so.

:D

Meths are too bitter and vile to drink anyway ... which is obvous 'cuz it's denatured.

... but if it's a stong drink you want you can get drinks that are 95.x% such as Everclear or in Spain (when I went) they sell a similer pure grain alcohol and I believe they are toxin free (basically eth. + water) and you can either down it straight or spike your friends beer and get him running up walls.

Or go to Areas of Canada and America where it is legal for the Natives of the regions to produce and sell (to an extent) their own brand of moonshine. It tastes nasty and you are better off getting a good strong Pussers Rum, that'll taste awesome and warm your entire body before very gently making you lie down and have a kip.
