Brian Cox - Solar System - BBC2

i disagree - he was 100% wrong. The Pauili Exclusion principle applies only to electrons in the same orbital - to say it applies to every electron in the universe and that no two electrons can have the same energy is nonsense. He was rightly called out by many scientists at the time.

Fair enough, I stand corrected..

That's it i've gone right off him.. I shall never let him on my tv ever again :)

"The problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it.

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!"

Thanks for this, thoroughly enjoyed
I’d also recommend this channel for some long form stuff with amazing visuals and narration:

Watched it all on iplayer in one sitting. Enjoyable and thought provoking on how lucky our planet really is

I don’t think lucky is really the word - if there’s was only one planet in the universe and that planet was capable of supporting intelligent life, then that would be a reasonable word to use.

Given the trillions upon trillions of planets that DO exist, it’s not surprising that we find ourselves living on one in which all the variable conditions are right for life as we know it.

We ARE lucky that we haven’t been subject to an asteroid impact that curtailed our evolution, along with one that helped wipe the dinosaurs out so we could be here, so I’d give you that one.

Science is awesome.

It would be extremely surprising to find ourselves on a planet that didn't have all the variable conditions are right for life as we know it.

The same principle applies to our universe, in context to the multiverse theory, and why our fundamental forces and universal constants are 'just right' in their fine tuning to allow matter to exist at all.
